OK, fine… “climate change”… or if you wish, “unusually high temperatures that have nothing at all to do with carbon emissions.”

Whatever the cause, you can forget about skiing and snowboarding in Prospect Park this year. Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe just announced that Winter Jam 2012 is cancelled due to the unusually warm weather. It was scheduled for Saturday, February 4th in Prospect Park.

“It is simply too warm to make snow, and the long-range weather forecasts and current ground temperatures make it extremely unlikely that snow could be made,” Benepe says.

Winter Jam, an amazing, unusual, and free NYC Parks tradition for 10 years, is basically a way to try out winter sports for free. It’s done in partnership with the Olympic Regional Development Authority, Lake Placid, I Love NY, and a bunch of other sponsors.

What can you do instead? Don’t forget there are still 6 open skating rinks in City parks (due to construction, the Prospect Park Wollman Rink is NOT open for ice skating this winter).
