So East Haven, Conn. Mayor Joseph Maturo was asked what he would do for the Latino community after four police officers were arrested on charges of harassment and intimidation. After his now infamous reply, “I might have tacos when I go home. I’m not quite sure yet,” protesters barraged Maturo’s office with hundreds of tacos.

Those tacos won’t keep forever. Maybe we can pool some $20s and get a livery driver to deliver a taco care package to New Haven? Here are three suggestions for awesome Brooklyn tacos Maturo might like (including 2 very trendy breakfast tacos):

Whirlybird Taco Williamsburg

1. WHIRLYBIRD BREAKFAST TACO.

Whirlybird is a new Williamsburg taco joint opened by Jeffrey Bailey, a rocker (he played bass for Virgin Forest and Phosphorescent and Virgin Forest), and coffee guy (formerly of Oslo Coffee, the Williamsburg roaster). He decided to bring the breakfast taco concept to Brooklyn after learning about them tour in Austin, Texas. Whirlybird’s tacos, built on crunchy, fried tortillas, include all-organic scrambled eggs, Oaxaca cheese, and housemade salsa, and are topped with a potato chip crumble. The coffee is from Oslo. 2. COCHINITA.

Located on 922 Fulton Street between Washington Avenue and Saint James Place, Cochinita, has been reopened after a July fire. Van Sias, a Clinton Hill-based food writer, recommends the Cochinita pibil, a mound of braised pork shoulder topped with pickled onions and cheese. He also recommends Cochinita’s pollo verde, which is chicken in tomatillo sauce topped with cilantro. -via Dining Local: Tacos, Tacos, Tacos – The Local – Fort-Greene Blog – NYTimes.com.

3. GUEROS  BROOKLYN.

The Underground Gourmet recently highlighted Güeros Brooklyn as part of its piece on the breakfast taco trend. They called the Gueros taco “relatively dainty and extremely addictive,” which is very much in line with the classic,  central Texas  breakfast taco, that’s “compact, streamlined, and understuffed.” – via The Underground Gourmet Reviews the Breakfast Taco Trend; an Exciting Crop of New Openings — Grub Street New York.
