Hi all, I've been searching for a recipe for many years and was hoping you could help.

I grew up in Bensonhurst, and there was a local grocery store there called Aiello's. Over near the deli counter, they had a store-made bread that I can only remember as "Yo Yo Bread," though as I was pretty young, it may have had another name. This would have been circa 1986-1992.

It was a round loaf with a hole in the middle (as if cooked in a tube pan.) The bread itself tasted fried, though I suspect it was simply baked in a pan with a ton of olive oil.

Inside the bread were little chunks of ham, or maybe prosciutto or salami...maybe all three?

It is definitely not "lard bread," though I do love that too.

Is any one familiar with this bread? Specifically, I'm hoping to find a recipe for it so I can replicate it this Christmas.

Thank you so much!

Hello Neighbors!

Prospect Heights CSA has recently opened up to new members. If you're not already aware, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In a CSA, a farmer partners with a community of people hungry for locally grown produce. That community invests in the farm by paying for “shares” of what the farm will grow before the season starts. This gives the farmer money to buy seeds and equipment and tells him or her how many crops to grow. Then, during the growing season, the community gets a “share” of the fresh vegetables that the farm grows, delivered directly to their neighborhood.

Prospect Heights Community Supported Agriculture is a community collaboration that connects a group of Brooklynites hungry for sustainably grown foods with Windflower Farm, a small organic farm located in upstate New York. As CSA members, we invest in the farm’s financial stability by paying for “shares” in what the farm will produce before the start of the growing season. In exchange, for 22 weeks of the year we receive fresh vegetables, fruit, flowers, free-range eggs, and more, delivered straight from the farm to the heart of our neighborhood. We were founded in 2006 with support from Just Food.

We are quickly filling up but have a few shares left. If you'd like to join, please contact info@prospectheightscsa.org, mention that you saw this on Brooklynian, and we'll send you a link to sign up! For more info, visit our website: http://prospectheightscsa.org/sign-up/how-to-join/

Behind the Book has joined the #GivingTuesday movement with support from two Brooklyn restaurants. On Tuesday, December 1st, Cow & Clover in Williamsburg and Chavela's in Crown Heights are coming together to support literacy in their communities by donating a percentage of their proceeds to BtB, a non-profit organization whose mission is to build literacy skills and motivate New York City public school students to become readers for life.

#GivingTuesday is held annually the week after Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to contribute to their communities.

These two local restaurants have pledged to donate between 10 and 20 percent of their proceeds this week to expand BtB's innovative literacy programs, which bring accomplished authors into under-served classrooms to lead writing and art workshops based on their books.

Now in 14 high-needs schools across the city, including Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy, and Fort Greene, BtB has a waiting list of 15 schools whose students would benefit from its successful literacy programs, which are part of the class curricula and adhere to Common Core Learning Standards.

The goal for the week of December 1st is to raise the $5,000 required to run one classroom program over a semester.

Chavela’s manager Rebecca Brown says, “We are excited to be collaborating with Behind the Book, and have seen firsthand their programs at work. This past spring Chavela’s had the privilege of hosting a BtB field trip for a group of kindergarteners. It was a fun-filled experience that brought the book they were reading to life. We greatly appreciate what this dedicated organization does in our community and want to support their efforts."

To be a part, please visit Behind the Book's #GivingTuesday page--and enjoy a meal at either (or both!) of these great local eateries.

For more information about its programs and how to volunteer in a classroom, follow Behind the Book on Facebook and Twitter (@Behind_the_Book).

About Chavela’s - 736 Franklin Avenue, corner of Sterling Place, Crown Heights :
Chavela's is a true Cocina Mexicana! With a taste of old Mexico, margaritas, and sangria flowing on draft, it's the perfect place for a quick bite or a full meal and to gather with friends.
www.chavelasnyc.com

About Cow & Clover - 291 Kent Avenue, corner of South 2nd Street, Williamsburg:
Located on the fast-growing South Side waterfront in Williamsburg, Cow & Clover's open layout embraces a family feeling, with an extraordinary culinary offering centered around the wood-burning ovens.
www.cowandclover.com

Hey Friends and Neighbors, CSA Members, Market Shoppers, and anyone who eats!

Currently it is the freezing cold middle of winter and the last thing on your mind is spring veggies ...Or maybe because because we are in a deep freeze you are dreaming of fresh healthy plant food!

Our winter days are spent looking through seed catalogues at all the exciting things we want to grow this year... (Some new additions will be sweet potatoes, strawberries, additional melon varieties, and a more colorful and extensive collection of heirloom tomatoes...yum!)

Common Hands Farm delivers fresh farm shares to members who pick up at numerous locations in Columbia County, as well as Brooklyn Boulders located on 3rd ave and Degraw in Park Slope. This is a unique opportunity to directly support young farmers raising sustainably grown food, and to full immerse oneself in what it means to have a healthy, local and diverse diet. The produce in our shares is often harvested the same day as delivery-- how could food possibly taste fresher and better?

Something that consumers don't often know is that CSA members that are able to sign up early in the winter months, are immensely valuable to farmers who are trying to buy crucial things like seed and equipment for the coming year.

We work hard to make our CSA manageable, working with feedback from our members we have allowed for a certain amount of item switching so you arent ever stuck with vegetables you dont like. nobody wants that...

We are also flexible with our payment plan and people can pay us in two installments so it is less fi

nancial investment right away. Even if you cant even do that for a couple of weeks, it means most to us to know you are on board. we also work with EBT and FMNP food stamps. talk to us more about payment options by emailing us at hudsonlocale@gmail.com

We really hope you join us this year and share this offer with as many friends as you can. If not, share our endeavor with as many people as you can anyway. It takes a whole community’s support to get a new farm off the ground. We look forward to hearing from you!

http://www.commonhandscsa.com to sign up/for more info, or email us at hudsonlocale@gmail.com

All other Brooklyn ice cream shops, and the vast majority of mom ‘n pop shops across the US buy a pre-made mix from a dairy farm.

Also, there are a few days left for our indiegogo fundraiser.
It's freaking cold outside. I want to start making soups and stews for dinner. Comfort food for the winter.

Any good recipes you want to share?

I've done chicken soup with tons of garlic and collard greens before. But it would be great to have a tried and true Albondiga , Menudo, or Pasole soup that's easy to make. (my spelling might be off there)

Share your soup or stew recipes please :bounce: =P~ anything really, I could use a better chicken soup recipe too.

Subject: Nature's Delite
Looks like South Slope is in for a nice treat. I passed by 4th Avenue (condominium building btwn 19th and 20th Street) while a muralist was painting a wall inside what is Nature’s Delite. I spoke briefly with the owners. The store will be carrying wholesome packaged and canned foods and a variety of hot foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner...yay (finally). What I found most interesting was that they will be the only place so far I’ve come across in South Slope that will have a create-your-own-salad bar. Seems like we will finally have a genuine healthy place to eat. The owners did mention that they are also carrying basic groceries in an effort to provide service for everyone in the neighborhood (including those who cannot meet the expense of paying for healthier foods).
