When it comes down to it, these are our Community Cats. They may have been adopted as kittens and then discarded. Some can be socialized again; some must be accepted as they are now: Damaged. Since People created this problem it's only fair that People become the Problem Solvers. We can do this with an open heart and in the spirit of Community.

HI all-

I want to rescue a litter of three or four kittens living part-time in the yard behind our apartment building. I have a place that will take them and check them medically and treat them and then find homes for them -- I just have to get the kittens to them. I'd like to do this tonight (Thursday evening) if possible, or tomorrow; otherwise we'll have to wait until Monday night to trap them. But I'm not sure time is on their side.

If you're in or near Crown Heights and you've got traps that I can use, please let me know ASAP -- and thanks very much.

Can fellow dog owners PLEASE keep your dogs ON the leash when allowing them in the Brooklyn Museum fountain. Not only are you risking at least a $100 fine per dog every time you do this, but it's going to ruin it for those of us who want to let our dogs play in the fountain ON-leash, if police start patrolling this area and tell everyone to keep out. Not to mention, not all dogs get along, and allowing your dog off-leash in a public area is very, VERY irresponsible.

I wanted to post a warning for extra vigilance in the park after an
incident last night. My roommate was walking my dog around 7:20 - 7:25
p.m. near the entrance to the park at Lincoln Road and Ocean Avenue. He
was approached by a man who chatted to him about how my dog was
cute, etc and then said: "Nice dog. Do you know how easy it would be to
take his head off?" He then violently kicked my dog and ran south down
Ocean Avenue.

Concerned that my dog was hurt, my roommate took
him back to our apartment before calling the police. Unfortunately, the
78th Precinct told him that he would have had to stay at the scene and
call 911 immediately to file a report.

It seems that a similar
incident occurred across the park two days ago, so if anyone else finds
him/herself in similar circumstances, please call 911 immediately as the
78th Precinct requires. (The 78th Pct oversees Prospect Park.)

Note: You can also call the 78th Precinct Detective Squad directly at 718.636.6483 to report any incidents. Also, we are awaiting a description of this attacker and will post with any details once they are provided. But as this kind of incident has happened a few times in the park recently, be on alert to anyone who approaches you or your dog and carry your cell phone!!

Gravesend Cat Friends is a 4 year old Trap- Neuter-Return (TNR) and Cat Rescue group. We have neutered over 400 cats so far, and fostered and adopted out dozens more.

You can check out and like our facebook page by going there and typing in our name in the search box.

We are seeking general volunteers, especially those with SPACE for holding trapped cats pre and post surgery (a few days before and after surgery)... cats are in special traps (that have 2 doors, and fork separators that allow us to safely clean the cat's litter and feed it without it being able to touch us, sort of a compartmentalized cage) the entire time and will never be let loose. Basements, garages, and covered porches are ideal for this. We operate out of South East Brooklyn, so Gravesend, Midwood, Bensonhurst, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, etc, are all ideal neighborhoods for holding spaces.

We could also use help trapping and occasional fill in with transportation to and from the vet's office, almost always on Monday mornings (8:30 am) and afternoons (5:30 pm). Jeeps are great for this, as we often have 3 trapped cats to move.

We are also looking to become an official 501c charity, so that we may collect donations. We're seeking grant writers, lawyers, legal specialists , accountants and others good with fundraising to do pro bono work and help us out with this. There are also many Pet Smart and other pet store grants to apply for.

Please let us know how you can help, and thanks in advance.

Important Alert: There is a huge increase in dog-napping occurring in our neighborhood and throughout the city.

Dognapping is a growing and heartbreaking phenomenon in Brooklyn, and in this city overall. Please do not EVER leave your dog outside unattended for even one minute. Do not ever tie them up outside of stores, restaurants, or anywhere in public, for any reason, for any period of time NOT even for one minute. Please - it is not worth the risk to your dog.

Please - if you need to do errands, just take the extra few minutes to bring your dog home first, no matter how quick you think you will be done, and no matter how much you think your dog enjoys accompanying you.

The insane reality is that people are literally pulling up in cars alongside tied-up waiting pups and snatching them, and teens are literally walking up non-chalantly pretending to want to pet the tied-up dog, and then stealing the dogs in a matter of seconds from whatever they were tied to by quickly unclipping their collar from their leash-tie, or simply unclipping the collar itself, and running off with the dog. And it is nearly impossible to find these stolen dogs ever again. Fact is that these stolen dogs are often horrifically used as bait-dogs in dog-fighting rings!! Horrible, but true, and dog-owners need to be informed of this rising trend.

Please - This is a terrible, but growing reality....Our dogs rely on us to protect them from harm and it is very simple to keep them safe. Never leave them unattended and vulnerable to being stolen. Not for even one minute. Never leave them unattended outside or in a car -- anywhere - ever - for any period of time. Its not worth losing your dog and putting its life in jeopardy.

PLEASE PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO WITH FELLOW DOG-OWNERS, WALKERS, PET-SITTERS, NANNIES, ETC...Anyone who might walk your dog, needs to be informed of this growing reality.
