Are you aware that every month the City of New York pays private carters millions of dollars to ship compostable food wastes to landfills in the Midwest, while we import compost from Long Island and Canada for our gardens?

I’ve created a proposed business that would collect these food wastes principally from small coffee shops, juice bars and restaurants and convert them to compost. This business would employ local youths to pedal bike carts to collect the wastes, then convert them to compost in small in-vessel composting machines located in manufacturing zones scattered throughout our communities. This type of business model exists successfully in other cities such as North Hampton Mass. and Phila. Penn. but has yet to take hold here in NYC.

It seems that the City wants more evidence of demand for composting services before they will create a carting license that makes sense for community carters such as the one I propose.

If we could get say 50 coffee houses to complete this survey, we might be able to convince the City that the demand exists.

Below is a link to an on-line survey I created that collects information about the demand for collection of coffee grounds that exists at local coffee houses.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WV5YT8R

Please feel free to forward this email to your favorite coffee house and ask them to complete it the survey. When you do so, you might ask them what they’re doing now with their coffee grounds, day old baked goods, fruit pulp, food waste and other compostables. Suggest you might be more likely to patronize an establishment that composts their food wastes, rather than one that sends them to a landfill.

Also feel free to forward this email to your friends as well.

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to learn more about what I propose.

Let’s see if we collectively can put an end to this foolish waste of resources and City tax revenues.

$200 OBO. For photos, please see the Craigslist posting: http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/fuo/4315703663.htmlWe're selling our IKEA chaise corner sofabed that was an early version of the FRIHETEN (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50242997/). It folds out into a full-size bed and the chaise flips up to reveal a sizable amount of storage for extra linens, pillows, or anything else you want to hide from view. We love this sofa and hate to see it go, but we're ready to try a different style. This sofabed has lots of options for seating and is even perfect for a 1-bedroom or large studio and especially for anyone who hosts out-of-towners (we also love to fold out the bed just for HBO Sunday nights :)We've had the sofabed for a few years and we have 2 cats who have picked at the edges. There are also a few water spots on the sofa (see photo closeups). To make up for that, we're giving you free pick of the pillows (Pottery Barn, West Elm, and C Wonder styles) shown in the photos. The sofa and chaise unhook for easy transport. The chaise is left facing only (it cannot be placed on the right of the sofa, too). Please email with any questions! Cash and carry only.

Roulette Presents:

Amina Claudine Myers

December 14, 8pm

What: Amina Claudine Myers

When: Saturday, December 14, 8pm

Where: Roulette, 509 Atlantic Ave Brooklyn, 2/3/4/5/A/C/G/D/M/N/R/B/Q trains & the LIRR

Cost: $20/15

Info: www.roulette.org / 917.267.0368

Brooklyn, NY: Roulette presents a pioneer, a virtuoso, and a legend, Amina Claudine Myers, December 14, 8pm. Myers has paved a musical career that embraces jazz, blues, classical, gospel, and world music traditions while maintaining an unmistakable voice on piano, as a vocalist, and as a composer of the highest order. In a special intimate concert, Myers surveys her extraordinary career and songbook, along with selections from her new CD Augmented Variations (on Blue Music Group), in a solo piano and vocal performance: a journey through through the past and into the future through reflection, reinterpretation, and renewal of the creative fire and spirit.

Born in Blackwell, Arkansas, Amina Claudine Myers, raised on gospel and blues of the South, quickly earned her musical chops and respect under the tutelage of Muhal Richard Abrams in the 1960s, and shortly became a member of the The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). In the late seventies, Myers toured in The Lester Bowie Quintet and The New York Organ Ensemble across Europe, Asia, and the United States, and performed alongside Archie Shepp in an historic performance in Cape Town, South Africa at The North Sea Jazz Festival. Additionally, she has collaborated and performed with the likes of Bill Laswell, Charlie Hade, and James Blood Ulmer, among others. Myers has received several grants from the National Endowments for the Arts, Meet the Composer, and New York Foundation for the Arts.
