What will actually happen to the former Capital One Building at 856 Washington

Despite several unfounded rumors (i.e. Trader Joe's), I can now confirm that this site has been purchased by a developer and financing is presently being sought for a multi-unit residential building.

The pro-forma sales estimates are $1300 a sq ft.

Unknown at this time if facade will be saved.

Crownside (formerly Bar Corvo) on Washington appears to have shut down. I never understood why the owners closed down Bar Corvo, which was very good and very popular, and replaced it with a less interesting restaurant with a more limited (and constantly changing) menu. The last few times I went to Crownside they had settled on a taco-oriented menu, and the food was actually quite good, but by then they had lost their audience and the place was usually half empty. A real shame.

Hello all, does anyone know why there are 2-3 black unmarked police cars sitting on St. Marks between Carlton and Vanderbilt Ave 24/7? Seems like they're planning on continuing for another month or so. Every time I walk past, I can't help but feel more curious. Anyone know anything? or have the guts to ask them?

Finally had a drink at Bar Sepia on Friday night. It's located on Underhill between Eastern Parkway and St. Johns. Very nice designed space with a small outdoor patio. Nice wine by the glass but with a really boring selection of beer in both bottles and on tap. Friendly vibe!

Longtime readers may recall that the former building at 816 Washington was completely destroyed by fire: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/33475/look-up-in-the-air-update-washingtonst-johns-fire/p1 After years of court processes re: whether the landlord was guilty of arson and (if he was) whether he should have to build rent stabilized housing to replace the rent stabilized housing that burned down, I am pleased to report that we are suddenly getting a construction fence, as opposed to merely a perimeter fence with murals. The light colored posts showed up yesterday. No new renderings have been filed with DOB, so I believe we will be getting a building that complies with the plans submitted several years ago. Rendering: I have no word on whether it will be market or subsidized.

406 Prospect Place, the 1,113 square foot parcel of vacant land on the NE corner of Prospect and Grand, was sold to an entity called "Grand Prospect Group LLC" this past July. The sale price was $650,000, or almost $195 per square foot.

The Prospect Heights Church of Christ, located next door, had been the owner of the property. According to a party wall agreement with the church, the new buyer is an entity controlled by an individual named Rob Loheit, about whom a quick Google reveals ... not much. He definitely does not appear to be a developer.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I'd love to see something nice on this strange corner of PH.

Posted: January 19, 2018 - 11:06am Landmarking BROOKLYN, NY, January 19 2018: The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (PHNDC), The Cultural Row Block Association on Eastern Parkway (CuRBA) and the Historic Districts Council (HDC) have announced that HDC has selected the Prospect Heights Apartment House District as one of its “Six to Celebrate” preservation initiatives for 2018. “Six to Celebrate” is a designation that the advocacy organization uses to set preservation priorities and channel resources to historic communities in need of recognition across the city. “The development of the eighty-two buildings along Eastern Parkway, Lincoln Place, St. John’s Place and Plaza Street East that make up the Prospect Heights Apartment House District represents a special moment in Brooklyn’s history,” said PHNDC chair Robert Witherwax. “In the early decades of the twentieth century, a vogue for high density residential living in Brooklyn coincided in this location with the opening of premiere cultural institutions like the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the construction of the subway underneath Eastern Parkway, enabling the creation of this new neighborhood. We’re delighted that HDC has recognized the value of preserving this history.” The Prospect Heights Apartment House District is part of an area originally planned to be included in Prospect Park. However, the “East Side Lands” were removed from the plans when Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted took over the design of the park. “The delay in development of the East Side Lands until the early twentieth century, combined with a desire to create a cultural nexus in central Brooklyn, resulted in a unique district that documents a vision of urban life at the turn of the last century, and which remains remarkably intact today,” said HDC Executive Director Simeon Bankoff. “We look forward to moving toward designation as a New York City Historic District.” The urgency of designation for the district has increased in recent years due to development pressure. So, the parking garage on Sterling between Washington and Carlton has gone belly up with Marshall's notice posted and a complete uncommunicative, uncaring set of new owners. Can't get our car. (But they keep telling us to come and get it and when we go there no one is there...) And we have been told our payment of $375 for January is never to be returned. (At least the hardworking attendants got their year 3nd bonuses because no one knew the place was hours away from from being seized...) It is quite clear. Who you gonna call? YIKES!

There's no shortage of opinions on whether or not a sports stadium would thrive in brownstone brooklyn. But one school of thought that I always felt was missing was around this question: How many new brooklyn transplants care about sports? And does that amount to a factor that matters.

When the Islanders moved in, I felt the reaction around me was "Oh cool. A new thing in the neighborhood. Maybe I'll find out what a hockey game looks like". But I don't hear much, if anything about them now. Is it possible that our capacity for sports excitement was over anticipated? From where I stand, it's sure not the days of the brooklyn dodgers any more.

That old out of place Mcky D's on the edge of Vanderbilt and atlantic, one day last month was insta-torn down to the studs, raising hope that it would go away. But unfortunately, after what some sources say could be a $700,000 makeover, that thing is here to stay. What are they crazy? Im sure thats 50 million dollar land its sitting on. They will now have table ipads for sitting, ordering and eating in that order. So at least that.

The business will include a restaurant, and also sell gourmet food items to take out. The Carlton Avenue location represents a new branch of a successful Clinton Hill business. Never posted here before but I live near the corner of Flatbush and Park and have been wondering what is going on there? It has to be a year now since the landlord kicked out all of the long-time tenants (including Lil Miss Muffin, the barber shop and El Gran Castillo) and the place still sits empty. Such a shame and becoming a blight on the corner! Anyone know what is going on?

SWEET CHICK'S WORTH THE VISIT

Finally went to Sweet Chick corner of Carlton and Park Place (and Flatbush). Warmly welcomed by Wanda. Seats comfortable (unlike the ones shown in the pix at sweetchick.com which almost kept me away) and a cheerful room. The noise level is horrendous, yet it was around two in the afternoon. Because of the hour most tables had people finishing, or were empty-- bar was full. BUT the food was very good, refreshingly different and tasty. Hesitated over the $5 iced coffee (New England frugal am I) but an addiction is an addiction and I had it. Worth the cost. Plenty of choices beyond waffles. Pleasant wait staff. Was celebrating a (Southern) friend's birthday and he was pleased with the fried chicken and waffles. Sat for almost two hours and no one rushed us away. A very pleasant experience--except for the noise level.
