My mystery novels have a lot of Brooklyn history and I couldn't do it without the library’s stellar local history collection, so I am especially excited about this upcoming event. Stein deftly weaves together the history of the Navy Yard with current economic issues influencing the area. She will talk about her research for the book and read an excerpt from "Brooklyn Wars". Park Slope Singers Winter Concert

The Park Slope Singers kick off our 25th anniversary season with a selection of works of reflecting beginnings, creation, evolution, and the nature of human achievement. The concert ranges from Franco-Flemish and Iberian Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works by Chilcott and Whitacre in an afternoon of music entitled “If We Must Marvel.” Included in this program are Manuel Cardoso, Benjamin Britten, Josquin des Pres and Jacob Clemens non Papa. Their music sets the scene for the program – establishing the themes of creation, nature, growth and human interaction with our surroundings and environment. As the program turns into contemporary themes, so too do the composers performed. Both Bob Chilcott’s “Five Days that Changed the World” and Eric Whitacre’s “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine” reflect on human achievements. For Leonardo da Vinci, dreams allowed imagination to soar and even though his flying machine was never realized in his lifetime, the audience listening to Whitacre’s music will hear the machine take off and fly through suggestive harmonies and rhythms. Flight – among the other achievements – plays a role in Chilcott’s “Five Days that Changed the World,” along with other inventions and triumphs of the human spirit. Rarely have emotions and memories been so roused simply by voices in song; the soaring melodies genuinely bring to mind the feeling of flight, the joy of discovery, the wonder of exploration in the way this evocative music stimulates the mind. Exploring these themes via a different approach is Gregory W. Brown’s “Missa Charles Darwin.” The piece as a whole has juxtaposed Darwin’s The Origin of Species with the Latin of the Catholic Mass ordinary. The Agnus Dei, excerpted for our concert, provides us with our concert title: “If we must marvel, let it be at our presumption that we understand the many complex contingencies on which existence depends.” Perhaps no other work quite sums up the 25-year relationship of the Park Slope Singers with the community as well as each member’s personal affection for music better than “I Have Had Singing,” by Steven Sametz. The piece examines the balance of life --- sometimes a difficult and strenuous road can be made enjoyable and memorable simply by the pleasures of singing. The Park Slope Singers share that view which makes this piece very special to us as we reflect on the history of the chorus and look to continue the pleasures of singing for the next 25 years. We will be performing two concerts of this exciting program under the direction of Timothy Parsons with Balint Varga accompanying. January 27 @ 2pm in Park Slope, Brooklyn at St. Saviour Church (611 8th Ave). January 28 @ 3pm in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn at Church of the Good Shepherd (7420 4th Ave). This is part of the Art on the Corner series. Tickets for both concerts can only be purchased at the door or online via our website. There will be a reception after each of the concerts. Join us for the opening reception of, Tell Me More- a group show featuring work by: Jennifer Dwyer, Natalie Fisk and Mary Negro.

The exhibition will be on view Saturdays from 1-5pm and by appointment.

Together, artists Jen Dwyer, Natalie Fisk, and Mary Negro traverse through the unknown, through transitory meaning, through issues of transparency and personal bonds to objects.
Using abstract and representational approaches to art-making, their imagery references innate desires for understanding.

Rejecting the traditional palette of ceramics, Jen Dwyer’s muted hues create open spaces that allow viewers to bring their own preconceptions to the work. Drawn to the airy and ethereal quality of clay lines, her works speak to the language of scaffolding. Exposing a literal physical observance of contemporary visual culture. Her sculptures become tenuous metaphors, questioning a culture that simultaneously strengthens and weakens its own interpersonal barriers through social medias.

Natalie Fisk’s paintings capture a liminal space between identified subject and affable uncertainty. In works such as Set Above, Try Below, viewers peer through loose lines of organic and inorganic color toward a deep space, where a mermaid cocktail pick floats. Fisk is moved by inner and outer consciousness, reality and the supernatural, positive and negative, and how art can create language surrounding the ambiguous and transient nature of meaning.

In large-scale drawings such as Entry, communication itself is Mary Negro’s subject. The narrative behind her stream of consciousness writing—rendered in colored pencil—is essentially obliterated after Negro contours the pencil marks with ink. A selection of her Landscape collages will also be in view. In this series, Negro suspends fragments of painterly text behind glass before creating arrangements that reference moons and mountains. Transparency and agency are foundational themes in both of these series.

Tell Me More is a demand that is never satisfied. Instead this exhibition examines how the unknown crafts understanding and experience.

Yoga Tips for the Rush of Fall from YogaSole

Dear Neighbors,

Back to School, back to dashing around, planning, scheduling. How do you keep your center? How do you keep peace inside? Here are some helpful yoga tips:

1) Relaxing Breath: Calm the Nervous System. Breathe in and out thru your nose. Breathe in for 4, out for 6. Work up to in for 4, out for 8. Then in for 6, out for 12. By letting your exhale be longer than your inhale you set up an automatic relaxing response in your sympathetic nervous system.

2) Meditation: Find a chair or comfortable seat on the floor. Rest your non-dominant hand in your dominant hand on your lap. Rest your gaze softly on a spot on the floor roughly 2 feet in front of you. Breathe in and out through your nose. Count to 10. If (when!) your mind wanders, start counting again at 1. Do not worry about your thoughts, just come back to the practice when you notice you have strayed. If possible, choose the same time everyday to do a meditation practice. But, anytime is a good time! The first day start with one minute. The second day do two minutes. The third day do 3 minutes and so forth.

Crown Heights Beach Bus (Weekend Beach Trips to Rockaway Beach) - July 9th through Labor Day!

PREGNANCY is an ideal time to start a yoga practice, or to deepen an ongoing practice. The pregnant body changes from day to day, offering a unique opportunity to continually refresh the beginner’s mind. This series will offer mommies-to-be tools to mindfully experience pregnancy.

The SERIES will foster a community spirit, giving pregnant moms the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from each other.

Saturday at 7pm, local Poet, Anthony Vigorito will be reading samples from his many beautifully crafted poetry books, much of which reflects on growing up in Brooklyn.

Start planning a Spring getaway with us to the beautiful Dai Bosatsu Zendo in the Catskils May 20th-22nd, where we will meditate and do yoga, much of which will be in silence.
