Deal announced this morning. Amazon paying $13.9 billion for Whole Foods. Guess they'll be able to deliver items faster. As an interesting aside, there was a report on CBS radio few weeks back that Whole Foods and Trader Joes were comparison shopped for about 30 of the same items at the two stores in Union Square. Trader Joes was $30 cheaper. So maybe Whole Foods really is "whole paycheck."

In a new update hitting desktop, Android and iOS today, the Google Maps team has done a little design housekeeping to clear some of the clutter and create a cleaner look across the board. While doing away with certain elements like road outlines, the update also adds a new feature that highlights active neighborhoods or "areas of interest."

These areas of interest are now shaded light orange are meant to highlight "places where there's a lot of activities and things to do" like popular business districts or neighborhood strips. According to the Google Maps blog, these areas are determined by "an algorithmic process that allows us to highlight the areas with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars and shops," although some additional human interaction is apparently needed to determine the busiest spots in high-density areas like New York City.

Take a look at areas like Nostrand, Franklin, Washington, and Vanderbilt and you can see that they get a lot of these areas right! It makes for interesting neighborhood watching.

Long story short, after 3 years in our UES apartment, my wife and I decided to call it quits.... with NYC. We quit our jobs, threw all our stuff in a U Haul truck and drove down to NC. Turned out to be the best decision I've ever made/agreed to... we are making more $$$, we just bought a house, and our quality of life is so much better. I'm headed up to NYC at the end of October for a visit so I just remembered this place.... how are folks holding up? What are folks seeing as the future of NYC for normal people?

Hi everyone.

In my effort to be a a wee bit less of my usual
Ms Piggy/psycho-ologist self, I have taken up rollerskating.

I never realized how inhospitable city roads are: (pot holes, broken glass, debris, hills that are treacherous for skaters and professional cyclists bent on running me over and proving that the bike lanes are not meant for roller skaters or neophyte cyclists)

So where can a non athlete junkie find a smooth continuous, level surface where they may rollerskate at their own pace in Brooklyn?

The only place I have found is in Manhattan by the west side highway. Smooth, sweet and lovely if you go when the mad cyclists aren't there.
