Help! Need to find a lactating mom cat!!!!

edited 4:33AM in Brooklyn Pets
Help! I have been given 5 - 2 day old kittens that were dumped in Prospect Park today. I have KMR but a lactating mom would be most desirable and would give these kittens more of a chance of surviving.
I you have one please call me at 212-945-8196. [/b]

Maybe you can ask Snowboard Queen if the pregnant cat that she kindly took in can help nurse them. Remember? Funny how things turn out, huh?

I'm sensing some kind of burn here, but I can't find it.
  • Hey LoKee. The back story is this. Not too long ago SBQ found a pregnant cat , took it in and found homes for all of the kittens to be. She mentioned it here and got flamed by tsarina and others. They thought that she should have the kittens aborted as there are too many cats that need homes in the world. I wrote in defense of SBQ and said that she did a kind thing and that they should leave her alone. I too got flamed and told that the responsible thing to do in such a case , is to abort the kittens. I pointed out that if the cat had been found AFTER she gave birth, everyone would rush to find homes. What I now find amusing ,is the fact that if everyone took tsarina's advice, there would be no lactating cats, of which she is now in search of.
  • Brit Princess, great post! You just couldn't resist that little dig, could you? Don't worry, there will never be a shortage of lactating cats, because there are still idiots out there. And it is funny how things turn out, Snowboard Queen couldn't help tsarina out with these abandoned kittens. Guess you'll have to wait for your dose of schadenfreude!

Anyway, if anyone has any info on a lactating kitty (hopefully nearby), it may save tsarina a trip to Long Island.
  • well Gee, i guess there's no chance of not finding lactating moms in our society. And especially this year there is a super abundance of kittens and unfortunately not very many adoptions. Good thing there are even more kittens now AND lactating moms. That is something to celebrate!!!!
And yes I did PM Snowboard Queen.
Now with the 12 rescued kittens I have (lets not count the adults and teenager cats) , and over 50 at BARC , and City Critters has a super abundance , and lets not mention everyone else, we can try even harder to find homes . Good thing she let that cat have kittens!!!
  • MOD NOTE: guys, please keep it clean in here. do not make me have to start deleting posts about kittens, for pete's sake.

  • Try reaching out to kittykind, neighborhood cats or as a last resort the ACC to see if they have any moms. Kittykind can help you place the kittens.

Kitten abortion? Do they even have that? Srsly? wtf

It's far more common than you would think, and it's not a pleasant procedure. It's why TNR programs are SO important for strays/ferals.
  • Its kinder to do the abortion hysterectomy now than euthanizing later on.
  • Really? And how many abortion hysterectomies have you been a part of? For me, the absolute saddest experience I have to go through. I hope you realize that if the pregnancy is far enough along (which with ferals they always are) each fetus is separately euthanized within the uterine walls. Ergo, for me it doesn't matter if it's an abortion or a euthanasia -- it's exactly the same process. It's terribly awful.

Again, it's why TNR programs are so important.
  • What's worse? Dying in the womb having never experienced anything else or living for who knows how long, who knows where, in an abusive home or on the street, then dying. Yes, aborting kitten fetuses is horrible and I wish it never had to be done. But is it better for a cat to die in a kill shelter, alone on the street somewhere, or killed by a car like Mr. Chin? There are not enough homes for all the cats and dogs that are alive right now, how anyone can justify bringing more into the world is baffling to me.
  • Gee it doesn't even have to take that long. Too many kittens at ACC and they go the the euthanasia room too. That must be the worst job choosing which kittens to select.

And no the feral cats dont necessarily have to be far along in their pregnancies when they are trapped. Sometimes you only find out they are pregnant when they get to the van for procedures.
  • Oh yes, And I've been part of quite a few abortion/ hysterectomies. Its a big procedure and obviously much more invasive than a spay. but we are always glad we get them before they have kittens. Is it sad? It is less sad to me than euthanising kittens and cats.

I guess it also has to do with which side of the abortion question you are on.
Hey way back when I had my abortion, I was out riding my bike the same day, glad I didn't have any more symptoms, and glad I didn't have to mess up the rest of my life because my diaphram failed. And hey, I don't feel traumatized about it either.

When I was younger I escorted at clinics, we worked surveillance on Operation Rescue, and did what we had to do to protect womens rights to choose. If its good enough for me , its good enough for my rescues.
    God doesn't always provide

Moderator , I hope I'm not sounding snippy, just discussing.

Abortion/ hysterectomies are standard procedures on the vans when doing TNR. Its not like" We need to do TNR so we can prevent Abortions"

Also getting back to the point of lactation- Snow Board Queen gratiously offered her lactating mom and unfortunately it didnt work out. Teen age mom was sick to death of kittens and wanted nothing to do with them.

Got some guy from Jefferson.edu in south Jersey, which upon doing some research found out has an animal research lab. So I didnt chance giving him the kittens.

then remembered the mom around the corner at the 99 cent store. ran inside, saw her, squeezed a nipple, found a drop of milk, grabbed the cat and asked to borrow it, and they said to just take her, they didn't want her.

Unfortunately, 2 kittens have died, but the remaining three seem to be doing pretty good (cross your fingers). Lactating mom wasnt thrilled to be back on duty, and she is thin as a rail , but she started cleaning them and in exchange for food she is doing a fairly good job.

I am so sorry to hear that two of the kittens have died. I will say a prayer for the others and I hope they find good homes. Glad you were able to find a mama cat to nurse them.
  • Oh tsarina, so sad to hear about the baby kitties. Let's hope the others make it. Please don't fight about what's right or wrong with the abortions. realize that you will not change anyone's mind arguing. At least here, we are talking about the notoriously bickering Brooklynian.

Let's focus on fostering, adopting and TNR programs. What can we do to better the situation.
  • And then there was one....
  • No! I don't know how you do it, I would be a complete wreck. You're a strong woman, I'm so sorry.
  • I hate to ask, but did the little one survive?
  • Damn. That's so sad. Poor babies.
  • the 5 kittens all died. another newby from Pet haven rescued by the cops also died. But Bed stuy rachel asked me to trap mom and kittens, resulting in 4 gorgeous black kittens, some with a few white eyelashes!!! currently their eyes are blue so they are to die for!!!! excuse that pun!!!
Today we transfered 5 ferals to an enclosure and mid trip found a maine coon kitten with long hair trying to get in on the food action. He was trapped climbing the tent walls!!! He is too cute, I dont know what I;m gonna do!!!!!
