My precious next-door neighbors are grilling meat in their backyard and the smoke's coming into my second floor windows. Do they notice? No. Time to complain.

Gees.. I hope you are kidding!! Close the window for a half an hour. Be a good neighbor and perhaps they will invite you for a dog on a bun!

If there is a ton of smoke (for more than just a little while) then it sounds like the kids don't know the first thing about grillin' (if not then just close the windows for a bit)
Gawd, I remember being at the park and seeing these dumb-ass college kids dousing a whole can of lighter fluid on the grill and then some more!!! Soon after they started burning and feeding their frat friends some smoke and lighter fluid flavored burgers. YUK!

Yeah, but I love it when I'm walking down the street, the weather is good, and I smell someone cooking a good burger somewhere. One of the joys of summer in the city.

OK, I'm starting to think you are serious. If backyard grilling really and truly bothers you, you should not be living in a city.
I don't mean to be snotty, but we are all living with and on top of each other, and there will always be noises and smells and crowds.
Unless there is a danger or unlawful, i'm afraid you;'ll have to live with it. If someone is grilling that USDA aged prime at 3am right under your window, well, that is their right. Next time, get an apt. on the garden level so no one else can bbq. Except, of course, your neighbors.
this is by far the dopiest thread around.

Suck it up Lucky11. You will simply have to learn to deal with it. I doubt you can't breath. If you are that sensitive, you should not be living in the city.
Anyway - barbecuing is a human right. It is in the Geneva Convention. Look it up.

My neighbors were grilling out back last night. I opened my windows wider and turned on a fan to suck the smell in! BBQ in the summer... Yummmm...
And yes, you really need to find something better to complain about. Or just shut your windows. It must be exhausting to go through life so put-upon all the time...

Know what? You're absolutely right About the leaving part. I've been sucking it up in this neighborhood for over 20 years. I used to love it, but now I'm bored, irritated and need to move on.
Have fun complaining about tapas with foie gras, panhandlers, kids in baseball uniforms, musicians practicing, and other worthy topics.

that's always a pretty tight field . . .
There are minor accomodations we make for each other. Fer instance, IF they could move their grill a little and have it be less a problem for you...
I asked my neighbor to stop smoking cigarettes right under my window, which was totally not a big deal since he could move out into the yard, and so stop effectively smoking in my bedroom with the fan pulling the smoke in. Totally not a big deal, and why would he know it was happening unless someone told him?

Read! It's not the smell I object to. I love the smell of BBQ! It's the actual smoke coming in the windows. And yes, they know about it now.

you know, this attitude (from this poster, and many others) is such bull. just because we all live on top of the other doesn't mean be can't be courteous.
pitu asked her neighbor to move when he/she smoked outside her window, and it worked!
people, find a balance. it's all about being good neighbors and decent human beings. ask them to move their grill a few feet if they can, if they don't, then they're assholes. just like all the other people who think it's ok to be nasty and rude and obtrusive and use the fact that we live in a city as an excuse.

Smoking cigs I would consider a bigger deal, as it happens year round and presumably with some frequency. Then there is that pesky cancer issue....
Grilling is generally infrequent and seasonal.
Lucky11 - how have you lived in this neighborhood for 20 years without anyone ever grilling near you? Your fois gras rant makes it appear that you consider grilling some sort of bourgeois activity. It also sounds like grilling is not the real issue here.
Next time they're grilling, grab a nice bottle of red wine, ring their doorbell, and get to know them. Life is too short to spend it being cranky.

if these are frat boys, here's what you do:
first yell from your window "hey ham-neck and the dutch chick! can i crash your grill?"
then wave a bag of coke and a lawn chair at them
you will blend
this also works with poetry readings if you substitute coke with meds, and the lawn chair with dire sadness
you too will blend _________________ destination: roam

Kudos to you for being so outgoing! I would be way too shy to try it if I were in lucky11's place. I never know how to approach my neighbors, aside from saying hi in the hallway. And in this case, I'd be afraid of seeming rude - I mean, I'd essentially be inviting myself over. How would you go about this?

How many people have gotten cancer from exposure to carcinogens in barbecue smoke? Sure - there may be "carcinogens" in BBQ smoke, but not all carcinogens cause cancer in humans. And even if it did, how much would someone have to be exposured to, and for how long, before it caused cancer?
Lucky11 might not like smelling BBQ smoke, but she is not going to get cancer from it. However, if her neighbors moved their grill into her apartment, closed all the windows, and grilled every day for a couple of years (without burning the building down), it might have an impact.

okay, this was in response to a person who said that cig. smoke coming through her window was worse that bbq smoke. check your context. _________________ what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.

I can't believe that BBQ smoke is good for you, I hope he was kidding. But I also doubt that BBQ smoke wafting into a window will cause cancer. Certainly not as dangerous as smoking a cigarette.

it wasn't about smoking a cigarette. it was about cig smoke wafting through your window vs. bbq smoke wafting through your window.

HEY. Please remember the rules (handily accessible from the "THE RULES" link at the top of every page of the site if you need a refresher) and stop sniping at each other. That's not directed at any one person -- several folks are behaving snottily here.
And please remember -- when someone is rude to you, that doesn't mean you have to respond in kind.
Jeebus.

what's up with these "rules"? there was nothing offensive in any of these threads. the rules say you can't be sarcastic and punchy. give me a break with all of these fucking rules.

Lmboogie, we have few rules here, but the primary one is we ask people to be nice in order to foster a neighborly tone here. Sorry you don't like that, but that's not going to change simply because you don't.
If you'd like to start a thread in "Ask Brooklynian" requesting that we reconsider expecting users to not tear each other apart so that folks can discuss whether that's a good idea, go for it.

Sorry to go back on topic, but I think I might sympathize a bit with lucky11.
Sitting at your computer, it's easy to romanticize BBQ smoke as just part of the "ambient sounds and smells of the city" that makes you proud to live in Brooklyn and clink beers with the neighbors.
Let's say the barbeque smoke was actually wafting through your window at this very moment, making you choke and setting off your smoke alarm while you were trying to concentrate on a deadline. You might have a different opinion.
Don't get me started about the pounding bass coming from the neighbors downstairs AND the neighbors upstairs. At midnight.
