From Friday's Crain's Insider:
BROOKLYN RETAIL
Gentrification in Brooklyn has major retailers
eyeing expansion in the borough.
Starbucks, which has 21 stores there, hopes
to open 25 more in each of the next three
years, says an insider close to the company.
Because of the borough’s improving demographics,
Duane Reade, with 30 Brooklyn locations,
is looking to double that number in
the next several years, according to an executive
with the drugstore chain. Chase Bank
has 46 branches in Brooklyn and is searching
for additional sites, particularly in areas
where income is rising, a Chase official says.
For those of you who have expressed an interest in more Starbucks in the neighborhood, it looks like we're in for 75 new ones in the borough over the next 3 years. I, for one, think it's one of the many death knells of Brooklyn. Soon this 'hood will look just like Greenwich Village. Which looked much like this 'hood when I was growing up there in the '70s and '80s and now looks like almost any strip mall in any number of small cities and towns in this country.
