Why is this a good thing? I'm just curious.
I've always ridden down the ave. (bikes, skateboards) late at night and there's nothing more fun than slaloming across that big fat wide road.
adding a median for pedestrians? you really need a 'break' from one side to the other?
if it's very well kept with nice plants, well, that might be nice. But I forsee a dead strip with stray coke cans.
will miss those late night runs.

Oh..
"* landscaped pedestrian crossings at Park Place, Bergen Street and Dean Street, and a raised and landscaped median between Prospect Place and St. Marks Avenue."
So it will be landscaped.. and it's billed as helping out bikers. Ok.. I'm down to check it out.. just not sure how taking away space on the road will make it easier for a biker.. shouldn't they just made better bike lanes?
Unless it's being done euro style with a separate bike line with its own median. THAT would be cool.

But I have to say that I do think that this is a good idea. The light to cross Vanderbilt is a short one and I see lots of kids going to school and moms with little ones trying to rush across that street so at least if you get stuck in the middle your can wait for the light instead of playing human frogger

So is anyone old school enough to know whether there used to be a trolley line on Vanderbilt? I'm assuming the answer is yes, because the street excavation in preparation for the new landscaping revealed these old tracks:

Pretty cool. I'm not nearly old enough to remember trolleys anywhere in NYC (i do remember double decker public buses and checker cabs though)...however this pic of Vanderbilt looking North from Grand Army seems to support the notion:
I mean look at that guy, thinking he owns the sidewalk!
There goes the neighborhood!

For the record- there was not a drop of lint to be found on Jeffrey. Clean as a whistle and very spiffy in his button down. _________________ "...you can choose the rain....but I choose the sun..." - N. Costa

Hah, WhyFi, close...
Suffice it to say that there is a place nearby that commands a fair amount of my attention, outside of my own work. _________________ i extend my battery life by averting extreme injustice and inherent evil

There used to be trolleys and elevated trains all over Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Dodgers were named so because Brooklyn pedestrians were constantly dodging the trolleys. Are we still dodging?

the divider looks nice, but i wish they would of built a separate bike path instead, like a road between park cars and side walk. _________________ Fight white guilt and injustice by going to a Native American casino and gamble your money away.

I'm I the only person that is annoyed at the city's poor planning? Why in the world did they complete repave the street and paint all new lines (double yellow, crosswalks, etc) only to rip it up again? I guess the pavement planners don't ever talk to the planter box planner. Wouldn't it have made more sense to install the dividers before repaving the street?
BTW...How long until some jackass puts his car up on top of those black and white "things"?

My assumption is (which may be wrong)... harder to pave with "white things" in the middle of the road then to just pave the whole thing. Let's give the construction guys a little slack, they may actually know what they are doing.

Okay but why bother with putting down the pavement markings?
Either way they have to pave around the "white things". If you look at the photos you'll see that the area around them has to now be patched. Seems like a waste.

the city loves to waste money, for example there is a very good patch of road on bedford ave in midwood, but every few years they tear it up and remake the roads all the roads there. its like clock work there.
while other areas with crappy roads never get it redone. _________________ Fight white guilt and injustice by going to a Native American casino and gamble your money away.

But didn't they just cut out what they had painted in (kind of like a guideline)? I was under the assumption that they put the lines down first as a way to see how the traffic would work before they dug it up and put in the medians.

Here's the problem with bike lanes:
Notice the double parked car on the left in the bike lane.
Notice no bicyclists in the bike lane.
Protected bike lanes are great if they actually go somewhere.
Painted bike lanes are a waste of taxpayer dollars as they just become double-parking lanes.
But you can dream that enforcement of bike lanes will be stepped up which is highly doubtful. _________________ Walking on the beaches looking at the peaches.
