the sheer scope and attention to little detail is amazing. it's really impressive. _________________ Get your paws off my canned chicken

I actually missed it last night , so I got up at 3AM and watched it in it's entirety - wow! It was the most beautiful, amazing, creative artitistic opening I can remember seeing at an Olympics.
Now on to drug enhanced runners and emotionally/physically abused little girls doing amazing things with tortured bodies. _________________ But that's impossible.
That upside down flag thing is pretty interesting. With such attention to detail, I can't imagine how that got through. Somebodies head is going to roll, literally. Maybe they can use it in the beach volleyball final (women of course)

i have always been impressed with chinese ability to get such a massive group of people to perform together in sync and detail, so i had been waiting impatiently to watch this ceremony.
so much so that i went to find the live streaming video online instead (partially, and longer too since it was unedited), and re-watch the whole thing again on nbc friday night. it was amazing, both the performance and the technology they use. very visual and artistic. i particularly love the human powered wavy box thing, and the tai-chi performance.
If you watched the Opening Ceremony on Friday night, chances are you said something like, "no way that's possible" at least once. It turns out you were right.
London's Telegraph newspaper reports that some of the fireworks which appeared over Beijing during the television broadcast of the Olympic Opening Ceremony were actually computer generated. But -- hold on -- it's not necessarily as bad as you think.
The faked fireworks were actually set-off at the stadium, but because of potential dangers in filming the display live from a helicopter, viewers at home were shown a pre-recorded, computer-generated shot. It sounds dishonest, but I'm not sure it's such a terrible thing.
The Opening Ceremony is, at its core, just one big performance. And isn't it accepted that some things might not be legit at a performance? The final torch bearer wasn't actually running around the top of the stadium, does the fact that everyone could figure that out make it any less? It might have been unnecessarily deceptive, but the firework-faking isn't that big of a deal. But, if I found out that the lighted-drum thing wasn't on the up and up, then we'll have problems, China.

Apparently, not all went off without a hitch...
Did anyone notice the BSOD projected on the Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremony?

whoa, hadn't heard about the...erm, sequestered...martial arts performers. that's the first one i've heard that actually bothers me.
related: why did it take so long for the media to pick up on all those kids being han? it was noted at the time at our house -- it was pretty obvious. love how the nyt was like "we have real happy diversity, but china just has all these ethnic groups because they took over their land. oh, except for the native americans, but that's just one group." except that "native americans" isn't one group, unless all those chinese ethinc groups are just "native chinese". US = totally happy diversity. oh, except for kidnapping and enslaving and forcibly interbreeding with all those black people. but if you want a diversity omelet, you gotta break a few eggs. _________________ Bumping ancient threads with bot-like bullshit
