Did anyone hear about the Bloods initiation that's supposed to take place today? They are supposed to kill 31 women. Is it real or a hoax?

Ugh...I've been hearing about this for days from my high school students in Brownsville. Such bullshit. Gangs are real, yes, but this is bullshit--and incredibly offensive. Not to mention the reason that there are so few girls in my classes today.

This is the same urban myth that's been circulating since the 80s. Seriously, I remember this from middle school in KANSAS.

I heard that there have been several face slashings in Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Downtown Brooklyn. One of the guys I work with has a brother who is a cop in Brooklyn he said that there have been several slashings and gang disputes that have resulted in arrests. He said be aware of your surroundings....

I think that "Mischief Night" is the night before Halloween, and yeah, it's always been a big prank night. It's called "Cabbage Night" where I'm from.

No matter what night it is, you should ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. That's just plain common sense in NYC or anywhere.

The night before Halloween was considered "Devil's Night" in Detroit. Pranks and burning down places was what stupid people use to do back when I was growing up. It was a real problem at that time cuz some people would actually go set an abandoned home , building , or whatever on fire. They had a curfew for anyone under the age of 18. We couldn't be outside after 6 or 7pm. They had cops patrolling the areas. Finally the Mayor , no not that one , the good one --> Mayor Archer changed it to "Angels Night". They ask residents to go to the police stations and volunteer to help patrol the neighborhoods. They give you an orange flashing light to put on your car for a 3 days. Things got much better after that.

There was some idle trash-talking about it (met with others calling it total b.s.) lately on the following site mentioned in a prior gangs-related thread:

http://thehoodup.com/board/viewforum.php?f=22

Here's Police Commissioner Ray Kelly knocking it down to just rumors, mentioning that there's been no specific evidence to support a credible, specific alert other than the usual heightened activity that occurs around Halloween.

And the Gothamist newsmap thingy ain't exactly lighting up either, if that means anything.

So I'm gonna go with the usual old hoax explanation here unless matters indicate otherwise. And watch my back. Laughing

Well the night is just about over, it was pretty uneventful by me. There were no gang/slashing warnings given to the Police Dept that I know of. The first I heard of this, was when Mom called and asked me if I knew anything about. Throughout the City there was plenty of mayhem, but we can chalk that up to just typical Halloween stuff in NYC.

Not sure about the rest of Jersey, but certain towns in Bergen County called it Cabbage Night when I was growing up. Was never clear on why it was called that. It was called that when my father and uncle were growing upt there too, and they had no idea what the origin of the name was either.

My son works in Times Square and he said that the week of Halloween two people were stabbed and paralyzed in front of one of the restaurants in Times Square. The police were there and they told the staff to get cabs home and stay out of the subways that evening. So my son and his friends split a cab ride home that night. I'm just saying this event really happened. He loves the city and I've never heard him sound so shaken up over anything there before.

He was told that the weeks of Halloween and Easter are gang initiation times. It sounds like it's not common knowledge and kept quiet so as not to scare tourists away. As his mom who visits him from Michigan, and who loves NYC, I can tell you I will not be booking travel plans to the city around Halloween or Easter. We've gone several times, walked and subwayed everywhere, been out late and never had any problem... but this was scary news and I know he was shook up from it.

He has been traveling to NYC since he was 16 on his own, tagging along with older friends. He gets teased about being from Detroit there, when he asks if certain neighborhoods are safe. Like nothing could be worse than Detroit! LOL! (But he was a suburban boy here -- not urban -- big difference!) However in NYC he's lived everywhere from the upper west side to Harlem to Washington Heights... and loves it all!

Why wouldn't he love it when he can go see La Traviata at the Met for $26 student rate and get Orchestra pit! And see a different opera the next night! This amazed me! More than one opera at a time running concurrently in the same house??? -- Can you tell I'm from Podunk - Detroit? Four operas is our whole season for the year... you get that in a month! NYC - what a city!!! I love it and I'm jealous of you all... but do take care and be safe!

hysterween |hiˈstewēn; |
noun
exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion or excitement, esp. among a group of people who think they are going to be attacked by other people who don’t look like them : I can get a seat on the Lex during rush hour since people are so scared of hysterween.

Which restaurant? When? What time? No reporting what-so-ever? Specifics or I'm calling bull.

No offence, but the adage "if it bleeds. It leads," is still the mantra for the newspapers in this town. If the post got a whiff of the "bloods" "mafia" "purple gang" or (insert faceless ethically-based gang i.e. "them") they would pull out the 98 point type and splash it on the front page.

It's not that I doubt that crime happens. I'm not buying the fear.

Paula, if this had actually happened in the way that your son described it, the news would have been all over it--even in a big place like NYC. Before I'm going to get worried about this, I need specifics: restaurants, locations, dates.

I'm not saying that something didn't happen, I'm just thinking that maybe the cop exaggerated a bit. It's been my experience that police at a crime scene generally aren't too forthcoming with information. Maybe this cop was just telling a story for the tourists to take home to Iowa....

I think it was the Saturday or Sunday before Halloween. Around 47th street hmmm... the cop was there for a disturbance not related to the stabbings... maybe that's their way of cutting crime down... having people avoid subways as a preventative measure? Lot's of weird stuff was going on in the area that week bad vibes... I thought it was odd that both stabbings resulted in paralysis. Maybe it was slashings instead? Still bad obviously, but as a dancer the paralysis thing really hit his hot button! He's lived in the city now for 3 years and never been worried about anything before!

My students in The BX were talking about this this past week. They said that Bloods were supposed to slash the face of or rape 30 women on Halloween. They said they knew of a few girls who got their faces cut. Seems like if 30 girls really got their faces cut, it would have made the news. Whether or not there is any truth to this does not change the fact that gangs are entirely lame.

I was going to reply with a dispute to the stabbing claim - I work on west 47th and didn't hear anything about it.. However, a quick search came up with this article - maybe this is what they were talking about. From the Post. Another one mentions that the kid stabbed outside of the theater was partially paralyzed as a result. Also, a third article says that four people were stabbed (all at a Saw V screening).

Then I was going to say that it's crazy that Easter is a more violent time than usual -- but then I found this.

who knew?

For what it's worth I've lived here my entire life and never been stabbed (I just knocked on wood) and, NY used to be much more violent than it is now. If it makes you feel more comfortable not to travel during certain times then do your thing, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. The NY metro area has almost 19 million people - the odds are very much in your favor.
