apologies if i missed a prior thread on this topic. has anyone checked out the new bar on the SW corner of washington and park? met the owner (maybe?) jacob this afternoon. really nice guy, said they just opened last night (still looks a bit under construction, but with quite a few beers already on tap).
really nice looking place that i plan to head back to very soon! huge back yard! _________________ I've done a lot of lying in my time. I've lied to men who wear belts. I've lied to men who wear suspenders. But I'd never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both belt and suspenders.

Did it go into the old Utopia/PK's space? Might have to check it out!

Just got back from an exploratory visit. Good staff, very friendly. The space isn't quite finished yet, but it's serviceable. OK prices (every round for two of us seemed to be $12), but they were kind with buybacks.
About 12 taps, most of which are interesting choices. Decent scotch and bourbon selection; most of the rest of the spirits are standard. Wine is questionable -- they had a basic pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc, but didn't have reds in stock yet. I'm willing to forgive this for the first weekend -- easily fixable (note: I'm a wine and spirits gal -- beer doesn't sit well with me).
First impression is that they're a good add to the neighborhood, but my instinct says it will be as crowded as Franklin Park in about 2-3 weeks, especially on the weekends with that (HUGE) backyard.

Further to the dear wife's comments...
16 taps, I'd try to name them all but I had a glass of Absolute bastard ale, a Scuttlebutt then a Weinsenstephen (sp?) so can't remember the rest. There was also Kwak, Abita, six point, stella, something with a monk on it, and eight others (they were on the other side of the bar so I can't remember and I was drunk because I hadn't eaten anything).
Same owners as 4th Ave Pub which apparently has twentysomething beers.

I came upon it after a museum visit.
Adding to the chorus, huge backyard. Great selection of beers. Friendly staff. I had Dupont and 6 point sweet action.
This place should be hopping on a day like today.

Beer place hopping. I don't know if it was intentional, but good pun. _________________ Hey you! Enlighten up.

I think I saw cables in place for TVs but nothing there yet. You might try Plan B for some baseball.

WOO-HOO!!!! So excited to have this spot a block from my apartment. Excellent beers on tap. A cozy, simple and slick decor. And a patio with loads of chairs just in time for good weather, and for smokers. That's what's up.

And they better not get TVs!!!! Want sports, go to a sports bar.
Seems like this is a great addition to the hood. Can't wait for some happy hour specials.

No food. But I recall over hearing the bartender saying you are welcome to bring food in/get delivery.

Exposed brick, dark beams, an owl painted on the ceiling. Spare, but classy. I loved the Coney Island Albino Python from the tap! The bartender says they will serve food at some point in the future.

Me, too. Great addition to the area. I'm sure they will do well. The bartender said they plan to add bar food by the summer.

went last night as well. the space is big - but the bar itself seems to take up 50% of the front room - it is weirdly huge behind the bar. the outside seems very big but it wasn't set up with tables or anything. the space also, somehow, seemed 1/2-done. Not sure what it was - but there was no specific atmosphere or vibe there. It was just a room that served beer. Great tap selection though.

agreed... it doesn't know what it is yet. there's a frame on the wall with a blank blue canvas in it. and i think that's it. _________________ Brooklyn Music Lessons
That frame with the blue canvas is plastered on the wall which I thought was kind of weird. Also, that bar is also enormous. The bartender has to take at least a couple of steps to get from the bar to the shelf, which I can't imagine will bode well for really crowded nights.
If anything else, hopefully all of the bar-with-an-outdoor-space seeking residents of the CH/PH border area will subconsciously collectively divide themselves up equally between Washington Commons and Franklin Park on any given night as to avoid over crowding at either place.

i'm a little ambivalent about the new place --
too close to my house, for starters.
the bar IS too big for the space -- proportions are off.
creeped me out to see it filled with people the other night,
none of whom looked familiar.
crossed fingers it's not soda-like.
i am a bitter 2006 arrival.

I was there last night for like an hour. It was a pretty cool bar looked a little unfinished but if you like fancy beer its definitely the place to go. the best part was that i got to sit by the window with my friends and there was this constant stream of people walking by with the " when the hell did this place open?" look on there face.

I stopped by tonight with a few friends. It's a nice space, with probably the best beer selection on tap in the neighborhood. Contrary to some of my fellow Brooklynians, I like the large bar. It give more space to actually sit at the bar. I think the distance to the hard liquor in back won't be a major issue for the bartenders, since the place is really about the beer anyway. The tables were nice too. I especially liked the one we ended up at, where we could order directly from the bar without getting up (it's the first one on the right after going up the stairs). The kid they had clearing the empty glasses was totally on the ball. I don't think any empty glasses hung around for more than a minute or two!
The outdoor space in bar is large, but definitely seems unfinished right now. They need to get some tables and benches out there.
It was pretty crowded and noisy, but it is a Saturday night. I'm going to check it out on a weeknight next time.

Went last night to check the place out. Liked the beer selection, loved the happy hour special and thought the bartender was super nice. He even let me sample some beers. The owner introduced himself to us and he was really friendly and welcoming.
However, I do have a few comments: 1) the physical space didn't feel that warm/welcoming. Not sure what they can do to change that. Maybe put some more things on the walls, paint some more, more candles. Not sure. 2) The crowd was VERY homogeneous. Basically it was 90% white guys. Very few women or non white folks. I find that rather peculiar for this neighborhood (or maybe I am just totally out of the loop and the entire neighborhood is now white). 3) Music was off. Can't be more specific than that, but I remember my friend turning to me at one point and commenting on the music.
In general I think this place has a lot of potential. Most of my friends live on Washington or near there so I would be psyched to have a spot that would be fun and comfortable to hang out. We shall see.
Oh, one more thing: I want BAR SNACKS! Their other place has the popcorn machine. Think they can spring for some pretzels or peanuts. _________________ Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.

Went after being totally blown away by the annex in Franklin Park Saturday night. Didn't compare IMO, looked unfinished. Definitely had some unfamiliar faces. Wasn't there for long.. _________________ "Is this really, the way it is?

we went around 12:15 on saturday night -- and there's little to no restaurants open at that point. anyone have suggestions for places in the area who do take out or deliver late night? the only place we found was a chinese take-out place that closed at 12:30.
