If it's GOOD Mexican, then I'm all over the place. We have way too many crappy/mediocre Mexican restaurants (Rancho Alegre, Mezcal, etc etc), but this will hopefully be in the vein of Chiles y Chocolate.

Carmen and I got ourselves invited in (surprise, surprise) during their "soft open" tonight for "friends and family". Hey, I'm friends with everybody!
I had 2 Don Julio margaritas on the rock with salt. Well made and ...um....free....loves free.....
Carmen had white sangria..I didn't taste it.
We already had dinner at the Hoff, but were coerced into eating a farmer's cheese nacho, which was delish with mole. Chef/managers, etc. are from Mexico City.
I'll be back to try it again

Ooooh, Flexi! I need to get to know you better. Walked by earlier today and noticed a couple eating. I like the interior and hope they do well. Looking forward to trying it when we can line up the sitter.

ask anybody how I got us all invited to the Union St. BBQ
(note: it was this past Saturday, but we didn't make it...but BigGuy, Christina, Carnivore, VooDoo, and others can vouch for my ability to get us the hookup)
I'm optimistic about Fonda (even though I don't love the name)
Oh, and I got a woman next to me to let me taste her chocolate pudding (delish) _________________ Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball!

I like the name. The key is to go with fOHnda and not fAHnda.

deLISH. I am going back tomorrow. That nacho was serious and the sangria was not the best i've had, but better than most. Menu seemed great overall, and manager and chef were from rosa mexicana! _________________ whoa hey whoa hey whoa

Actually the name is good if you understand spanish slang. Fonda connotes a popular local dive. Nothing to do with Jane or Henry.

Still, wouldn't it be amazing if "Fonda" were a Vietnamese place? Hello Hanoi Jane!

Ha! After a bunch of drinks last night, I'm not planning on a repeat. I'm old and I need recovery time!

As an aside, I'm sure people are curious of the price point- from my recollection apps were in the $6-10 range with main courses around $12-17. Desserts were around $5. I found it to be reasonable considering the upscale feel of the place.
Don't quote me on this.
Also Flexi has a nice picture of the dish that we had, a farmers cheese taco with mole (right, flexi?) Maybe if we're all really nice she'll post it. _________________ whoa hey whoa hey whoa

Went to Fonda last night with the hubbs and another couple. In short, it was delicious. One of the best meals I've had in the Slope. No, THE best meal I've had in the Slope.
We started with cocktails. I had the tamarindo margarita, which was superb. Husband had the michelada: beer of choice with lime juice and hot sauce. Like a carbonated bloody mary... really interesting and good. They comped us a free guava margarita, which was really good and really nice of them.
Appetizers: we had the guac, which was super fresh and excellent. Love the mini-tortillas they provide. The farmer cheese tacos were good, but could have used a little warming up (they were slammed busy while we were there). The duck appetizer: can't comment bc I don't do duck, but others said it was very nice. The chorizo appetizier was the real winner. It's actually a queso fundido (baked, melted cheese) with chorizo on top, but the cheeses were insanely good and the chorizo was perfect. They also comped us two of the apps... I guess bc the kitchen was so busy.
Entree: I had the pork adobo, which comes in a really nice mole sauce. The pickled onion and carrots on top really made the dish.
Desserts: we had the sampler, which allows you to try 3 difft desserts for $11. Chocolate pudding, brownies with cajeta and tequila whipped cream both delicious. The pineapple dessert, however, knocked it out of the park.
Everyone was really gracious and friendly without being overbearing. It's a good sign that the place was packed the entire time we were there. So happy to have this place so close. Go South Slope!

I went last night with my wife and we were really hoping for a great meal. I had a whole scathing review all typed up and ready to blast, but I've decided to just post my favorite quote that has ever been said to me at a restaurant....
"The chef is really embarrassed and will not come over, we would like to pay for that meal and we hope that you will come back.”

I was there last night, too. Didn't have the same experience as PuckBrooklyn, however. Place was really crowded and service was slow but the food was quite good.

"Fonda" means inn or tavern in Spanish. I think it's a great name - simple and lovely if pronounced correctly. It may also be inspired by La Fonda del Recuerdo, one of the great Mexico City restaurants that preserves the best of traditional cooking. If that is an inspiration, then the place has a lot to live up to! I'm looking forward to it; the owner was earlier involved at Rosa Mexicano, which was one of the first restaurants to bring upscale traditional Mexican cuisine to NY.
