Looking for: Absolut Brooklyn poster

Posted by: AttilaTheFun Posted in Prospect Heights on Fri Sep 03, 10 9:33 am

Hi there, this may not be the best forum for it, but does anyone have ideas on where I could find an Absolut Brooklyn poster? I see them on the sides of telephone booths but cannot find one online or eBay to purchase. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

16th Street Rats

Posted by: JR_in_NYC Posted in Park Slope on Fri Sep 03, 10 9:04 am

I know technically it's Windsor Terrace. Went to pick up a bagel at Terrace Bagels and saw these two non-union rats parked outside of Shawarma Mediterranean Grill Flame House on 16th Street bet 8th Ave and PPW. I guess they're employing non-union workers. Smile

I assume the real reason is the TKR management company is using non-union workers. I thought the rats only came out for construction sites using non-union workers.

seeking bike advice

Posted by: lnelson Posted in Brooklyn Sports and Fitness on Thu Sep 02, 10 9:34 pm

I'm looking for a bike for general tooling around on paved roads, nothing fancy needed. I just don't want it to be a piece of garbage. Definitely needs to have multiple gears and handbrakes, but other than than I'm not too picky.

I'm not living in Brooklyn (sigh) or in any place where Craigslist would be of help. Can anyone suggest a brand or location (such as dog box store) or specs or anything I should be looking for?

Danke!

Hi. There's a gray and white cat that lives in my neighborhood who I and someone else look out for. He lives behind my neighbor's house but he's pretty much a 'stray' (or as others would say 'feral' and not friendly to people). He showed up a few weeks ago holding up his paw and limping but shortly after was walking on it. I hoped it had healed but it hadn't. Now the injury is swelled up, maybe infected, and he needs vet care. He's having trouble walking.

I've reached out to the Mayor's Alliance for Animals, to Sean Casey Animal Rescue, to a few vets, to cat rescuers and, thus far, I haven't found a way to fund this cat's care. There is no back up 'system.' He may need extensive care (medication, boarding, etc.). I feel like he deserves the help - he's a neighborhood cat and he may not have an 'owner' or guardian, but he's a good kitty and he's hung in there for awhile.

If I was in a different financial situation, I would fund it but, at the moment, I'm not.

I want to try to catch the cat but it doesn't seem like many vets want to be paid 'later' and I can't pay at time of service. In my opinion, there should be something set up where they agree to donate a certain amount of their practice to helping out situations like this - but that's another subject!

I don't know the order to do these things in but thought I'd write in case people are able to contribute towards his care... I could set up an account or a ChipIn or something, if a bunch of people contributed, that would go a long way.

Thanks!

I love this neighborhood

Posted by: spnder Posted in Crown Heights on Thu Sep 02, 10 12:38 am

In a deviation from the normal list talk: someone went ahead and did a little fix-up job on the Swoon piece on Franklin that had been partially painted over. I was SUPER stoked when I saw this. Not only because I had been thinking about doing something like this for the longest time (and never did) but also because they put their own spin on it by adding completely different faces on the bodies. If you're reading this, great job! Totally made my week.

Here's a couple pictures:

I just noticed this spot the other day. On Nostrand at DeKalb, next to Sugar Hill and across from Home Depot.

Any reviews of it? Do they serve food? Alcohol? It looks like an interesting space, and there appears to be a stage area. I am curious if it's seasonal or they have a cold weather plan.

The website just has basic information:

West Indian Day parties

Posted by: dougallcurrie Posted in Crown Heights on Wed Sep 01, 10 10:43 pm

A longtime neighborhood resident informed me to expect some loud and lengthy parties this weekend tied to the West Indian Day Parade, including one in the empty backyard next to the fire station on St. John's between Washington and Classon where there was an incredibly loud 4th of July party with full soundsystem until 3 in the morning. She told me these gatherings always have police permits, but I'm wondering how they can be allowed to go on that late and that loud? Does anybody know if it's possible to check in advance with the local precinct to find out if a permit has been issued and how late into the night it is valid for?

Dry Cleaning & Laundry

Posted by: canyontothesky Posted in Greenwood Heights, Sunset Park on Wed Sep 01, 10 10:15 pm

Where is the best place to go for drop-off dry cleaning (most importantly) and laundry (not do it yourself, I heart Clean Rite), between the Prospect Ave (consider to 15th St) and 25th St R stops on 4th ave? Options currently are 4th Ave Brite & Clean and Clean Rite. I assume the former is cheaper, but not 24/7. Any other options/recs? I just started a new job today so I'm absolutely beat and have no patience to do laundry just this one time, and I need a good regular dry cleaner on my way to/from the subway.

Neighbors and Post Office Meet to Resolve Problems

Posted by: JoyR Posted in Windsor Terrace on Wed Sep 01, 10 3:41 pm

Representatives from USPS Consumer Affairs called a meeting at the Kensington post office to discuss complaints with the manager.

Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com
Several months ago, a neighbor (Catherine) asked people to send her their concerns regarding mail delivery in zip code 11218. She collected twenty-five separate complaints. Over a period of several weeks, she patiently worked her way through the postal system in an attempt to find an advocate to help us. Her patience was rewarded: representatives from USPS Consumer Affairs called a meeting at the Kensington post office to further discuss these complaints with the manager.

Attending last Wednesday's meeting, in addition to Catherine, were

* Alan Dubrow, Chairman of Community Board 12, and Heather McCormick, a member of the Albemarle Neighborhood Association, both of whom represent our neighborhood on the USPS Community Advisory Council of the Brooklyn Postmaster,
* Andrea Burrows and Archie Warner, who work in the Consumer Affairs Office of the Brooklyn Postmaster, and
* Kensington Station Manager Mike Scalise.

Everyone present agreed that the delivery and service problems in our area are real and significant. The Post Office officials seemed sincere in their commitment to make improvements.

The best course for postal customers to take is to report problems as they happen, since unknown issues can't be addressed. If you experience problems (for example, no delivery on a particular day, lost packages, etc.), here are two suggestions:

1. Call the Kensington Post Office and speak to Mike Scalise. He gave Catherine these three numbers to use:

* (718) 436-0164
* (718) 436-1082
* (718) 686-7293

2. Send an e-mail to Heather McCormick. She has set up a separate account to gather information regarding post office problems in 11218. Heather compiles the data and forwards it to the Brooklyn Postmaster's office on a regular basis. She requests that when you write you are as detailed as possible, describing the issue, the date/time, and your delivery address. The email address is: kensingtonpohelp@aol.com.

City May Be Required to Trap Raccoons

Posted by: JoyR Posted in Windsor Terrace on Wed Sep 01, 10 3:38 pm

A bill requiring the Department of Health to trap raccoons seen anywhere in New York City was introduced by the City Council last Wednesday.

A bill requiring the Department of Health to trap raccoons seen anywhere in New York City was introduced by the City Council last Wednesday. It was then referred to the council's Committee on Health. The bill, Int. 0319-2010, is titled "A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York in relation to the removal of raccoons."

According to the Daily News, "the city Health Department would be encouraged to humanely release the critters. Under current guidelines, most trapped raccoons are euthanized because they can carry rabies."

The raccoon situation has been discussed by residents at Albemarle Neighborhood Association meetings. Our City Councilmember, Brad Lander, is one of the six co-sponsors of the bill. The main sponsor is Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley of Queens.

After dark bike ride tonight? (Wed Sept 1)

Posted by: nomad Posted in Random Stuff on Wed Sep 01, 10 7:54 am

I've not been paying too much attention to the boards over the summer (sorry!) so not sure if there's a thread I should post this to or anything...

But, the nights are getting shorter, and I'm beginning to miss summer already (even tho' it's going to be 94 today!), so on what I anticipate being a warm summer night, who's up for maybe 2 laps of the park and a beer at Sepia afterwards?

Meet at GAP at 9pm? Or if 8.30pm is better we can do that.

(Note I can only post sporadically whilst at work so please feel free to sort out time amongst yourselves and I'll check back to see what's been chosen.)

On the other hand it might be super sticky (humid) so if no interest, then that's fine.

Police @ Central Library

Posted by: SaintMarky Posted in Prospect Heights on Tue Aug 31, 10 2:35 pm

Around 1 PM today (Tuesday) there were about 8-10 policepeople in the lobby of the Central Library, and a couple of them outside. Just as I came through the doors they were all running through the lobby.

I guess the heat is getting to people.

Hey everyone -

I'm an independent filmmaker in the neighborhood looking for props for my no-budget film. If you have any -

strollers

&

dolls

laying around that you'll eventually throw away...before you do...tell me where I can pick them up. They are needed for scenes that will be shot soon.

I appreciate your help very much!

Berkeley Bob's visit to Sterling Place

Posted by: BerkeleyBob Posted in Crown Heights on Tue Aug 31, 10 1:00 pm

I have posted on this board a few times how my family has a long history on Sterling Place going back to 1900's when my grandfather bought a 3 story building between Franklin and Bedford. We basically fled from the street when my grandfather who was held up a few times in the early sixties, died after being pistol whipped during one of the holdup's. He was in his early 70's.
About 13 years ago after coming back to Brooklyn with my wife who is from Brooklyn, we drove to the building and checked out the street. Seemed dangerous as where my grandfather had a dry cleaning, tailor shop it was turned into a small grocery store with the cashier behind bullet proof glass.
This summer I dropped my son and nephew off at Prospect Park and walked to Sterling. Had no idea it would be such a long walk. Was impressed with Sterling. The people I saw looked nice and the buildings looked good. I walked past a school where I'm sure my mom must have gone to when she was a girl. When I crossed Franklin it seemed not as nice but still ok. The building my grandfather owned is there but the first floor store was bricked over and now must be a residence. Wanted to talk to some people but really no one to strike up conversation with. Walked back going down I think Washington which was much livelier to Eastern Parkway and really enjoyed the scene at the library with a farmer's market and a teenage jazz band. Could see why my mom loved her neighborhood so much.
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my walk and visit to Crown Heights.
Bob

Park Slope Rock School is starting it's fall semester on September 18th and registration is still open! Now in it's third year, PSRS has been growing fast and is quickly becoming a fixture in the Park Slope Community.

Park Slope Rock School offers students aged 8-16 the chance to practice and perform rock music in a positive, interactive and exciting environment, regardless of ability level. From the first day of class through the end of the semester, our students are making music as a band, learning the basics of playing and performing rock music in a collaborative setting. Our curriculum incorporates various elements of rock composition and performance, with lessons focusing on rhythm, chord progressions, improvisation, instrument technique and stage presence.

With weekly band rehearsals and the opportunity for small group and private instruction, Park Slope Rock School helps students develop their talents individually, all while contributing to the larger band concept. Our semester includes master classes with professional musicians, photo shoots, recording sessions and a rockin’ final show at a New York City rock venue. We are continually amazed by our students passion, creativity and, most importantly, their ability to rock out!

PSRS' founder is also available for private lessons on piano (all levels) and guitar (beginner), specializing in contemporary music styles.

Shoutout- thumbs up to Prospect Park Animal Clinic

Posted by: Carmen Posted in Brooklyn Pets on Tue Aug 31, 10 11:47 am

With all the complaints about vets and threads asking for vet recommendations, I just wanted to give a thumbs up to my vet (who I just returned from) at Prospect Park Animal Clinic. I initially brought the pup to Animal Kind and, while I was happy with the service, I did feel like they pushed a lot of additional testing on me for a healthy 13 week old dog.
I went to PPAC for Bruno's neutering after discovering that they accepted Muffins Certificates (horray cheap!) They were very professional during that procedure, didn't suggest a bunch of unnecessary stuff and the dog came back microchipped and no worse for wear.
I just brought him in for his annual and the experience was awesome. I was seen on-time and they were very kind. He got all of his vaccines and some blood drawn while a tech held him and kissed his head, he was then given lots of treats (apparently he didn't like the low-cal crunchy ones so the tech found some soft ones for him totally on her own free will although I insisted that he wouldn't die without a second treat haha) and the cost seemed reasonable (a little under $200 for the visit, 3 year rabies/parvo or whatever it is, heartworm bloodtest and 6 mo of heartworm meds.) The advice I received from my questions seemed down to earth and they really didn't seem like they were trying to gouge me at all.
The whole visit lasted 20 minutes, during which I was with the vet the entire time, not a tech which seemed standard at Animal Kind. The lobby is clean and inviting with no animal smell. The animals waiting didn't seem traumatized and bruno even tried to follow the vet when we left so he obviously wasn't scared.

Thumbs way up for this vet, I fully intend on taking him and any future pets there in the future!
