Behind the Book is a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

We're looking for a volunteer photographer to document our team participating in the annual Generosity Brooklyn series 5K run/walk to raise funds to provide books to our classrooms and school libraries, and sponsor students in our programs.

- Sunday, April 29th
- 7:00 - 11:00 AM (end time is flexible)
- Prospect Park, Brooklyn (south side; enter at Prospect Park SW at Machate Circle)

You'd capture runners signing in to receive their bibs and t-shirts; the race begins at 9:00 AM. Then you would document them crossing the finish line and receiving medals (start and finish are in the same general location). There's also a warm-up session led by a pro, and a winners ceremony. We'll also need shots of corporate groups, and some other designated images. A BtB rep will coordinate the details with you.

To apply, or for more information, please contact Emily Rosenberg at volunteer@behindthebook.org with a link to examples of your work.

There’s more to A Ministry of Cats than TNR, Colony Caretaking and Feral Cats: the energy that holds all that together is the thing that triggers my life purpose. The need to write; the need to advocate; the need to be alive for a reason; personal development and evolution are all put into service to achieve my purpose in life. When people ask “what’s your purpose in life,” I think that we all have the same basic purpose and that’s to become aware and therefore fully alive.

Knowing your life purpose helps you to survive in our complex world and you need a map or you’re either going to drift like a Jelly Fish or keep crashing into the rocks like flotsam. The difference is in what triggers us to keep going and gives us the focus and motivation to direct that energy outward. When you become isolated your energy stagnates because it stays with you and has nothing to do. “Why bother” becomes the question of the day. I may be rescuing myself over and over again and bringing the underdog with me and I want it to be to a better place so I want to do my best every day.

Realizing that I had become an adult and had the freedom to break out of the conditioning of a lifetime was the biggest gift the Universe gave to me - not counting the gift of life itself. This is why I enjoy motivating people to succeed, especially people who work in isolation. I’m a champion for the Loner because I’m that Loner; I’m that Fringe Dweller and I used to be that Underdog. I’ve learned how to overcome most of that and I love sharing my Plan of Attack!
There are a lot of ways to jump start your productivity and overcome setbacks and the beginning is with your knowledge of who you are; what you want and where you want to go in life. You can tap into some incredible energy using some of the resources that I will point out and you will never be the same again.
If you want to walk away with some tried and true approaches to some life obstacles then pay attention because once you address these issues and create your plan you are setting yourself up to Succeed and you deserve to succeed.

Bee Facts

In North America alone, honey bees pollinate nearly 95 kinds of fruits and nuts, including almonds, avocados, cranberries and apples. Each of us relies on bees — and the pollination services they provide — every day. But bees and other pollinators are reaching a tipping point, with beekeepers reporting annual hive losses of a third or more in recent years. What’s at the root of this trend? Scientists agree there are multiple, interacting causes at play, including pathogens, nutrition and habitat loss, and pesticide exposure. One thing that everyone can do to help bees is to provide pollinator-friendly gardens, with native flowers, no chemicals, and a water supply. http://www.nwhoneybee.org/education.html

It's run by the Sheep Station people.

I had a preview of green curry ramen soup and it was goooooood. Rich, spicey in a balanced flavorful way - mmmmmmmm. (They've been working out the soup recipes and serving them on occasion at Sheepie. I also had some bitchin' chicken soup with a homemade dumpling during the tryouts.) I'm going to like this place, if I can keep affording to eat out . . .

It's next door to Cherry Tree on 4th ave (67 4th Ave by St. Marks Place).

Now old timers may recall that this cute little space used to be Mule Cafe. Mule was bought out by the owners at Cherry Tree ( remember when Cherry Tree used to also be a hostel?? Oh yeah, for backpacking young kids from around the world, good times). The space was thought to become an extension of the bar. Well, it was shuttered, I think there was landlord drama, and the nice old wood exterior and insides went to shite. Years and years later it's open! But not a peep from any blog or Slopian. So has anyone been here and would like to report?

PS..
Well, I was jumping on here to give a heads up about the new Mexican place that's opening where Biercraft used to be, but now I'm seeing a lot of storefront news so I'll add the link here: http://parkslopestoop.com/blog/food/august-2016-slope-eats-drinks-opened-closed-whats-coming-soon/

The sad news first:
The Australian pub Sheep Station (149 4th Avenue at Douglass Street) is closing! Man, they have been around forever and were very much a locals place. They were one of the first to open a nice restaurant/bar on that crappy stretch of 4th ave. Times have changed, I'll miss their amazing poutine.

Los Nopales (191 5th Avenue between Berkeley Place and Union Street) is opening soon. I'm pretty excited about this because they claim they'll be 'authentic,' but maybe I shouldn't be. Mexican food and Park Slope is hit and miss. May places have closed, like Jalapenos (bad), Calexico and Maria's (mediocre,) and La Taqueria (good.) And how is it Mezcals still exists?? That place has been here FOREVER.

I haven't tried the new Tex-mex place El Habanero on 5th ave and 3rd Street. If anyone has, please chime in. If you have any openings or closings to share, or just want to reminisce feel free to here.
Mindfulness is key to reducing suffering, increasing well-being and
resiliency, and recognizing our natural wisdom. It is an amazing tool
for personal insight and overall wellness because it can help us find
space in crowded places, inside and around us. Mindfulness is an
antidote to our fast-paced, tech-infused urban lives, and can be used at
any time, quickly bringing lasting beneficial results.

Sounds great... but how is it done?

The S.I.T. Mindfulness course offers an in-depth progression through the
essential areas for mindful attention and investigation. You will learn
the history and context of mindfulness, the scientific research that
supports its efficacy, and discover first-hand the ways that it can
benefit your life. The class will allow time to thoroughly investigate
and experiment with a variety of techniques that will offer a personal
experience and understanding of how to apply apply mindfulness into the
respective areas of life where we are looking to experience less stress
and improve our health, emotional and mental well-being, and
relationships.

This 6 part series runs from 6/21/16 - 7/26/16 on Tuesday evenings from
7:30-9pm. Each of the modules includes teaching, experiential exercises,
group discussion, and suggested home practices. This class is open to
people of all age, background and religion.

Please note: S.I.T. is also available as a series of private sessions
for individuals/families and for the staff/members of organizations. For
