Hi everyone. I was born and raised in Brownsville until the age of 13. Lived at 192 Bristol then 196 Bristol until I was 8 or so, then moved to 274 Amboy Street until I was 13. I have a brother called Pito and a baby sister named Carmen (not baby's anymore :). My dad was head of maintenace at the high school (263) for many years. Although I am not of the Jewish faith, I did become familar with all the traditions that I still enjoy to this day with my close friends. We were the first latino family to live on Bristol Street. My father's name was Andres and everyone knew him. I remember the soda shop in the middle of the block before reaching PS 175. I had my first egg cream there - I remember this well. That's where I met my friend Jay Silverman. He also attended PS 175. I clearly remember the push cart man - he sold bleach, eggs, etc. There was a chocolate flavored powder that he used to sell that came in a heavy glass jar - does anyone out there remember this? If so, do you recall the name. I'm so happy this site is available and to be able to share all of our Brooklyn memories.

My father's 60th birthday is approaching, and I was hoping I would be able to find a photograph of his childhood neighborhood to give to him as part of a gift.

He grew up in an apartment on 11th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a picture of the neighborhood from the 1950s, or better yet, maybe have one in their own collection? Are there any landmarks or popular stores from that area that he would be sure to remember? I've checked out Brooklynpix.com and I am not confident that the tax assessment photograph will be of good enough quality.

Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks!

While I attended more than one public school the one I remember best (also that last one I attended) was PS 39. In 2009 my twin daughters and I visited there. Drake’s Cakes, which actually started in Brooklyn. Today, Drake's are known for Ring Dings and Devil Dogs, but when they started in 1888, they sold pound cake by the slice at 1006 Wallabout Market.

The winners were, left to right, 13-year old Harold Gold from the Bronx (first place); 13-year old Philip Rothman from Brooklyn (second place); and 10-year old William McGowan from Brooklyn (third place). The judge, NBC Songstress Diane Courtney, congratulated the boys.

Read more, including an exhaustive history of Drake's Cakes: http://brooklynhistory.org/blog/2012/03/09/brooklyn-history-photo-of-the-week-no-hands-cake-eating-contest/

Hello: I'm writing a non-fiction book about the youth gangs that existed in the South Brooklyn area, focusing on the 1950s and early 1960s. Were you, or someone you know, a member of the Jokers, South Brooklyn Boys, the Butler Gents, the Gowanus Stompers, Red Hook Tigers, Kane Street Midgets or any of the other numerous local teen gangs? Or perhaps you grew up in the area and have some stories/information to share? Above all else, I'm simply looking to depict that era in South Brooklyn as it truly was, and what it was like to be a young person from the neighborhood in those days. I'm currently a resident of the area, but I know full well how much the neighborhood has changed. I'd like to document this part of its unique history.

This is very much a real book, and not a self-published vanity project. I would gratefully acknowledge within the pages of the published edition anyone who has a story to share, or even just some details that need filling in. I'm available at southbrooklyntales@yahoo.com, and would of course be happy to communicate via phone or in person if you'd like. Regardless, thank you for your time.

Warmest regards,
Richard

My name is Tina. I lived in windsor terrace from 1964 to 1974, at 519 vanderbilt street. At the time we lived there the lot behind our row of houses was empty, except for overgrowth of weeds and bushes. We often played back there. I have heard there are condos there now. Across the street on the corner of prospect avenue was the american leagion post 1175, my father was a member so my brother and I got to play in that building almost daily. Many years before that it was a movie theater. I know the american legion is gone but is the building still there? What is it today? I am looking for any info or pictures of the old neighborhood or how it looks today, our old house, the block, the old american legion building, anything, or anyone who used to live there at that time. The school we went to was Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) on Fort Hamilton and we also went to IHM church. I would love pictures of the church. I found pictures of the school on their website. I remember when it snowed we would walk to prospect park and sleigh ride or vanderbilt street turned into 18th street which was a big hill that we also rode our sleighs down. I have great memories of living there. I have not been back to brooklyn since 1974 but will be planning my first trip back soon, and I'll post here to find the nearest and nicest hotels to stay at. Once you lived in brooklyn, you take it with you wherever you go.
