Volunteer to Help Make Brooklyn Students Readers for Life
Volunteer to make Brooklyn kids in underserved public schools excited about reading!
Behind the Book is a non-profit organization that brings accomplished authors into K-12 classrooms to lead workshops that guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book. BtB's programs, which are part of the class curricula and adhere to Common Core standards, have a proven track record of building literacy skills and motivating students to read.
No experience or training is necessary to be a volunteer. You'll assist kids with writing, research, or art projects. Sign up for any of these two Crown Heights program dates (there are two in Fort Greene as well) by contacting [email protected], or completing a brief questionnaire at http://www.behindthebook.org/join-us/volunteer/
Program 241SSK
Author: Stephen Savage
Book: Supertruck
School: PS 241, Crown Heights
Kindergarten students will read the story of an unappreciated garbage truck who saves the city during a blizzard when he turns into a plow (sorry, spoiler alert!). They’ll write about the special thing about themselves that no one else knows, and create their own superhero capes to represent their power.
Author: Steve Metzger
Book: Detective Blue
School: PS 241, Crown Heights
The first grade students will read Steve’s nursery rhyme comic book, which tells the story of the detective on the case of missing Miss Muffet. Then they’ll write their own nursery rhymes—but with an updated Brooklyn spin. They’ll also create comic book pages as their art project.
