And I hate entitled NYC residents who are forever trashing the midwest!

It used to be that self-appointed hipsters attempted to elevate themselves by trashing suburbanites, but now the preferred target is the Midwest.

Seriously, what's up with that? Someone, please explain to me why a person born and raised in Brookyn, Jacksonville, Austin, or San Diego is superior to someone born and raised in Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, or Cleveland.

Some of my best Midwesterners are friends...

I think it's just that a lot of midwesterners moved her during the 90s boom. You know what they say, "familiarity breeds contempt." I don't think anyone seriously believes we're inherently superior though.

Actually, I think the midwest is disproportionately represented among the hipsters themselves.

Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, and the Carolinas in my experience.

What I've noticed is that those from the Midwest are more likely to admit to being hipsters. My best friend lives in Chicago and "hipster" just doesn't have the negative connotations out there that it does here (in my opinion).

I didn't know that "hipster" had any negative connotations until... I dunno, couple weeks ago...

Dude. "hipster' is sooo 2003. Nowadays, it's Whatever-You-Are-Currently-Into + "mafia". Examples:

"I went to the Tea Lounge last night, but couldn't get past the Toddler Mafia"

"Going to see the portastatic and John Vanderslice show at Southpaw? It's sure to be filled to the brim with the Horn-Rimmed Glasses Mafia"

"I stopped going to Great Lakes once it got overrun by the Hipster Mafia"

"I went to 2 Toms for dinner last night, it's an old standby for the Mafia Mafia"

Ditto my friends in Chicago. In fact, they even refer to their own friends as hipsters. Sometimes they try to refer to my life out here as having hipster qualities, and they seem to be meaning it as a compliment. Little do they know how much time I spend reading and knitting.

Yeah your so right ; it is wrong to generalize about Midwesterners - we should just get back to this threads original point...how all the Moms in this one (150 sq block) neighborhood are obnoxious, enititlled, self-absorbed asses and they all have spoiled loud children.

Hipsters and knitting have been linked in the media as far back as 2001.
