thrift stores in PH?

usually go to the thirft stores in queens but i am feeling lazy, where do i go to get new (used) clothes in or near PH?

Salvation Army? But I don't pretend to know what's cool, hip, happenin', MAD HOT, etc...

I'll tell you a story -

A friend of mine and his wife bought a cabinet of sorts in an antique store and brought it home - during the weeks after, he experienced very strange happenings in his home - the refrigerator opening and closing - his cabinet drawers opening and closing - it actually freaked both he and his wife out - and me, after he told me his tale. He was, in my opinion, a very credible and honest guy - so was his wife. He returned the cabinets to the antique store and from that day on the mysterious happenings ended.

Based on that tale, I decided to not bring into my home belongings of those gone (unless I knew them) and to let them find rest where they are - and to not scare the sh*t of me - particularly if they are still clinging to this life.

While I don't want to deter you from wearing vintage clothing - because it is oh so vogue and reasonably priced - I cannot recommend a source - because I cannot be certain of what you will actually be bringing home.

No, I am not a freak! Just confident, there is more to us (US!!!)

My BF found some great stuff for work there. The women's section wasn't so hot, though. But then, I hate shopping so I didn't have the patience to look through as much as I should've.

Hootie Couture on Flatbush at 7th ave has great vintage clothes. I got a knee length rabbit fur coat there that helped me make through the last two winters. 8)

First, full disclosure: I *think* a friend of mine owns this building. That said, I did buy some clothes there in it's previous location (off 7th Av.). She has some really cool stuff. I felt it was a little over-priced, but I was spoiled from buying vintage stuff outside the city or at Domsey's. But it's so close, it's worth a shot.

i don't like the salvation army on flatbush, i priced some housewears at target and the target prices were cheaper! there is the salvation army in clinton hill, but is there another one more CH or something...

maybe the rain will actually stop and the stoop sales will be out!

what about that place off 6ave right where 6th ave meets flatbush, i think it's st. marks on the park slope side, anyone been there before?

I don't know about the place at 6th & 6th. I'm not surprised about the pricing for housewares at the Salivation Army. I remember visiting one on 5TH Av in PS and looking at the prices on their furniture. I kept thinking, they'd have to *pay* me to put that shite in my apartment.
Let us know if you have good luck anywhere (after you've gotten all the good stuff, of course).

If you're willing to take a little walk, I think the Goodwill on Livingston and Nevins has better clothes than the Salvation Army. It's certainly more organized. The prices cannot be beat.

You could try Beacon's Closet (President and Fifth) It's not PH but I've found some good stuff there

If it's still there, (I have'nt been there in a while) Domsey's in Williamsburg is worth a visit. They had a great selection. There's also a Salvation Army right off Classon, up the block from Arthur's castle, I forget the name of the street.

I haven't had any luck with local thrift stores, but the ones in Queens continue to rock - I went out there for lunch today and came home with all kinds of good stuff.

went to the salvation army in clinton hill, but it is kind of dark there and closes at 4:30... so, since i got there at 4pm, not much time!

good stuff there, especially housewares.... but yeah, queens.

can you guys share more info about the thrift stores in queens? Which subway stop? Is there a certain area of Qns that has lots close together? Thanks!!

On Quincy street, right at the elbow where it makes a 90 degree turn is a fantastic, derelict structure that used to be the headquarters building for the BMT. An artist named Arthur (I forget his last name) bought it in the 70's and filed building plans that are part of the permanent collection of MOMA. He is building a heliport. Very slowly.

Yep!! I think I know what you are speaking of. A crazy looking building that looks partly abandoned, partly "worked on" with fencing up high? I am remembering it from memory. Drove past it once and was so amazed I had to drive by it again. Do you know if there are any pictures available of the building on the web? Just curious.

Basically I am looking for a large floor mirror thats under 30... if you have any suggestions let me know...

it's really, REALLY expensive. don't waste your time.

i've had very good luck with the salvation army on atlantic between nevins and bond . three floors with the whole bottom floor for furniture. i find the one on flatbush and bergen too small.

Beacon's Closet on 5th Ave & President St is a great place for cheap hip clothing. They also buy clothes from you, but they are very picky. It's horrible when they hand you back your whole bag and say condescendingly, "Sorry, it's a little too conservative for us..."

also, for the person who had the question about Queens: I think this is one of the best thrift stores in Queens. But you need a car to get there. definitely NOT convenient to PH.

they blew up a few years back when there was a write up in time's out magazine. used to be what seemed to be neighborhood people in williamsburg before the scene was out of control, but after the article.. people started hauling in bags from manhattan and elsewhere. beacon's closet was then able to expand (used to be where that record store and coffee shop "fix" is), then move to the warehouse location in the willy'b, & also open the 2nd one in park slope. used to be cheaper and way more cool, too. oh, well..

Which amuses me, as a good portion of what Beacon's Closet was selling in their PS store on Sunday was indeed conservative (also very picked over, but hey - it helped me walk away buying nothing. Well the style of clothes and that there was a tremendous backup of people waiting for changing rooms).

I've lost 50 pounds in the past 5 months, and seem to drop a clothing size a month. I need to get better about thrift shopping, as my wallet simply can't afford to buy a whole new wardrobe once a month!

What's the closest drop-off place near Sterling & Underhill? Address please.
