Hair Color

I know people have posted about salons that they like in town, but I'm looking specifically for a place you feel comfortable experimenting with color and highlights. If they're good with curly hair that's a bonus.

    Beehive in W'burg.

Hey, I go to Beehive, too! I like them a lot and if I ever got my hair colored, I'd definitely trust them with it. Don't judge their haircutting skills by the current state of my hair because I haven't gotten it cut in ages and it's really shaggy.

I have always been very happy (as have many, many of my friends) with Sheryl at La Comme on West 23rd Street in Manhattan. Reasonable prices, willingness to be funky or sedate, as you wish and a very kind, sweet person.

The Aveda Institute offers it up on the cheap.

Marice at Salon Strategy is a color specialist...and while most of the clietele is African-American, he does do white hair and he's a master colorist...on the pricey, but really good.

Robert Kree in Greenwich Village. Can't say enough good things about them. Decent price for the quality, too--and you get free wine.

not in the hood, but if you have curly hair I highly recommend Devachan in SoHo http://www.devachansalon.com/devachan/home.html. They specialize in wavy/curly hair. It can be a bit of a cult (they have pretty strict feelings about how to maintain curly hair which for most take some getting used to) but I have probably sent 8 or 9 people there in the last two years and have never had anyone come back disappointed. They also do great highlights for curly hair (they do a painting method instead of foils which I think works much better).

    Ray at Artista. 212-242-7979.

Its on 18th and 5th. Ray is a genius but he is only there a few days a month so call ahead.

He is expensive ($90 for a cut and $150 and up for color) but he is SOOO worth it.

It is very cheap and no frills. They do a great job. Lucia has cut my hair for years. She colored my hair after I screwed it up... It looked great!
