why do i suddenly feel like i should be getting paid for promotion by PSSC, with all the posting i do about them?

space=acceptable, meaning its a gym in new york city, and space is never going to be perfect. the weight area can get pretty crowded during peak time, but i've seen much worse (anyone ever been in Bodystrength gym on the UWS?)

machines=they just brought a bunch of new ellipticals and treadmills with nice little fans and tv screens on them. i actually like the older ellipticals which they seem to be phasing out better, but the machines are definitely well managed.

crowd=very friendly. pretty much everyone is there to work out. people of all shapes and sizes. only one sweaty guy who never wipes up after himself.

i forgot what other questions you asked. i tend to shill a bit too much for them on DH, but its my gym, i enjoy it, and love to spread the word.

Kinda off topic, but I'm so happy that my gym (Crunch) is finally opening up a branch walking distance from my house on Union and 7th. My ever-expanding waistline shows that I'm not so good about going to Manhattan to work out on the weekend (or really ever). :?

do you know when the crunch is opening up? I've been meaning to join a gym, especially since winter's coming and I won't be as likely to walk for excersize. One would assume that once the Crunch opens, Park Slope Sports Club will have to make some special offers, or Crunch will have some introductory deals or something...

I got all my info from the Park Slope topic, but now no one is really sure which gym Crunch is taking over!

i'm not sure where the rumors on the gym on 7th and Union are coming from, but i heard about PSSC's company buying out Crunch from an instructor during a class, and was the first to bring that rumor on here.

does anyone have first-hand knowledge as to what's going on with the gym on 7th and Union, or is this just name confusion?

It's looking like name confusion. Union & 7th, Flatbush & Sterling...it's still close to me! :D

ETA: Just thought of something: If Crunch is taking over PSSC, does that mean it'll have the pool they're building too? That would be so cool. 8)

here's the thing...i asked the instructor about who's taking over who, and he said it was Fitness Ventures taking over Crunch and not the other way around.

I'd imagine Crunch is the more known quantity, so they'd be stupid not to use that name.

i have no clue as to any pools. i'll believe all that when i see it.

here's my question: why are the homeless guys on Flatbush telling me that the people switching the letters on the Pavilion marquee are from American Apparel and are getting the letters from inside?

i agree with you that this is all just a bunch of name confusion.

Crunch is owned by Bally's and even if Fitness Ventures was associated with NY Sports Club, etc., I'd be surprised to see them taking over something associated with Bally's size.

Ok, so my lazy ass hasn't been to PSSC in over a month, and I just noticed the Crunch takeover banner. Is this a superficial change, or did I need to haul myself in to get a new keycard and haggle about rates?

I think there's a thread about the changeover on the PS board.

Ah, new site is up. I called, and they are continuing to honor memberships, and plan to change the keycard system. The woman I talked to said information would be mailed out concerning the switch.

I actually went there the other day. Not a fan of the layout (too narrow, the locker room is a closet, and I couldn't find a sit up bench. WTF?), but they've got plenty of machines and it's all nice and shiny.

all rumor, but i heard that pssc/crunch/whatever is in a dispute with the landlord about the theatre space that they wanted as a pool. apparently they had expressed interest and the landlord gave them right of first refusal as soon as the space becomes available. but, then, american apparel came and offered more money so the landlord is attempting to go back on the agreement they had made with the gym. can anyone confirm any of this?

i work out there in the mornings usually and its great. there r plenty of machines to use, the weight room is never crowded and now that its a 'crunch', i can work out at the my hubby's gym on 42nd & 11th when im at his place.

    give it a shot.

i go there... i dig it, though at peak hours it gets kind of crazy, and you could wait forever for an elliptical machine, but I don't really go at peak hours so it works for me. it's actually a more comfortable gym environment than any i've been in before, there's a pretty mellow attitude about it and you don't get the feeling that you're being sized up all the time.

Er yeah, but I have a special membership rate through my present job, so I can't really say. But, I think it runs around $50-60/mo for 1 gym, $70-80/mo for the passport normally though.

Crunch has taken over Park Slope Sports Club. If you have a certain type of membership (the fullpriced $80 per month membership), then you can use Crunch Gyms anywhere in the U.S. On Saturday night, I used my Park Slope Sports membership card at the Crunch in Soho. Its great! Unlike ParkSlope SS, some crunches have steam saunas. Also, you can use your ParkSlope membership at the Fort Greene Sports Club---which is now Crunch, too!

We get a Crunch discount at my job. It is $56.00 a month to use any/all of their clubs.

I am on the fence! I was a PSS member years ago. I wasnt too impressed. :?

the official word is that a separate investor bought both Crunch and SFV, installing the head of SFV as head of the joint venture, but keeping the Crunch name.

as far as the "new" gym goes, coming from someone who's been at this gym almost every day for five years, here are my thoughts:

    - the overall gym remains the same. no major changes in machines, etc.

    - the class structure was overhauled, and not for the better thus far.
some of us have started a letterwriting and phone call campaign to bring back our kickboxing instructor, who taught the best attended class at that gym and was unceremoniously let go. the new classes are, for the most part, dumbed down and "Manhattan-ized," if you get my drift (although the new Thursday kickboxing person will definitely give you a good cardio workout, just not much of a kickboxing experience.)

    - i've heard from one friend who used to be a trainer at PSSC and is thinking about returning that they are definitely paying their people better.

    - there's definitely been a lot of new faces at the gym since the name change and change in pricing structure. a lot of Crunch-ers/ites have come in. they appear to have two arms and two legs like everyone else, but you never know....

overall, its still the best gym, by far, in the area. i don't see that the Crunch name has brought anything too new, and the haphazard overhaul of the class structure has definitely negatively affected the culture of the gym. to new people joining, it won't make a difference, but classes were better before for us long-timers.

    back to lurkdom.

I have nothing against crunch, but if anyone is on the fence as to what to do, do yourself a favor and check out Body Reserve, yeah the website sucks but the equipment is great (rumor has it the're getting some quality treadmills, the ones with tv's in em) and they just added some brand new equipment. Overall the place is spacious and clean, the staff's great, and the members on the whole are friendly and courtious.
