We are seriously considering buying a place here...any thoughts on that immediate area? The recent focus on muggings on this board is giving me pause. We've lived in Ft Greene on Myrtle and Clermont for years without incident...

I have a friend one block away -- I don't think you'll find any particular crime problem there.

I think the OP is saying that they are thinking of moving to PH from Fort Greene

I personnally do not believe that crime is any more of a problem in Prospect Heights than any where else. This board does give it a lot of press though

Try checking the official NYPD crime stats at the NYPD website; not sure of the link but should be easy to find

If you go there and walk around, I think you'll find that the neighborhood feels very safe — especially compared to where you're coming from on Myrtle, two blocks away from a massive housing project.

I lived on Lafayette till two years ago. I think you'll find that Vanderbilt Avenue near your corner feels like it's years ahead of Myrtle as far as restaurants and development and feeling safe.

For muggings, the subway stops on Flatbush may have a higher concentration of iPods per person than any other place in Brooklyn. The muggers are there because the wealth is there.

ps: I think it's a good measure of the crime hysteria on this site that someone who felt comfortable on Myrtle is now worried about moving in West of Vanderbilt. How did that happen?

Boyfriend and I live a few blocks away on Underhill and St. Mark's, and friends of ours recently moved in right around the corner from your prospective block (and the lucky bastards have the nicest landlord I've ever met!). It's a great area with lots of conveniences nearby, and I've always felt very safe on that block.

Best of luck with the home-hunting!

    Subject: Carlton

Been living between Carlton and Vanderbilt for 20 something years, never have been mugged even when they were burnt out building and crackhead smoke pipe on my way to school... Stop being paranoid, remember the terrorist are out to get you to , so why not move into a cave....This board has been getting out of proportion, NYC has one of the lowest crime rates in the country....

That is exactly what I'm talking about. Here's the truth about "Coffin Ave." In 2005, my extremely suburban parents came to visit me and my wife in Brooklyn. I put them up at 641 Carlton, a bed and breakfast between Prospect and Park. They had a great time. Thought the neighborhood was cute.
