Pub fare in the slope?

Hey,
I'm looking for a low-key place to get a great chicken sandwich with fries, not trendy or expensive... just a tavern-type place with a "typical" bar menu. Burgers, etc. We like Bonnie's Grill but are looking to try something new. Any ideas?

I don't think they have chicken, but Sheep Station fills the bill for the low key pub menu - steak or lamb sandwich, fish and chips, meat or curry veg pie. They have burgers, but I've never had one (as a Bonnie's loyalist, and not a big burger eater anyway)

On the south end, we sometimes go to Chip Shop for take away, and bring it to Commonwealth or the Gate or whatever bar we're going to that doesn't serve food and doesn't mind (tidy) eaters.

how about johnny mack's for burgers? 8th Avenue and 11th or 12th. sit in the bar, not the restaurant.

park slope ale house for fish and chips? 6th ave and 4th or 5th (of course, they're not as good as Chip Shop, but decent as pub food goes)


side note: i long for a true pub in Park Slope. i don't think it'll ever happen, but i can dream about one. (le sigh)

I second pitu's Sheep Station recommendation--the pie with minty peas is deeeeeelicious, as are the beers. And it sure is wood-paneled and cozy in there!

12th street bar and grill - but the grill part. Around the corner from the restaurant on 12thst btwn 8th and PPW. Don't know about chicken sandwich, but they have a great burger and fries. Also, haven't eaten there yet, but maybe Union Hall?

Alchemy has a decent burger. They have other pub food on the menu too, but I haven't tried it.

I would second Park Slope Ale house. But difficult to see the TVs, if that's what you're into.

didn't try it, but dram shop's food looked really good.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions... I was really excited the first time I went to the Park Slope Ale House, but ended up having a really disappointing dinner. Really bad chicken fingers as an app turned me off. And I walked in loving the ambiance and the menu. Guess I should give it another shot? Anyway, we ended up at Teddy's in Williamsburg. I checked a bunch of the menus from the local places recommended, but nothing seemed to have what I wanted. (I am pregnant so maybe I was being rather picky due to my specific chicken sandwich craving...) I do enjoy the one that Bonnie's offers and love their fries, but didn't feel like waiting on line. Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions. Will be sure to check out some of the places I haven't yet tried.

hey there... i should have read more carefully to see that you were looking only for chicken!

i would also recommend Sidecar when you get a jonesing for poultry, but not necessarily chicken. they've got a sandwich called "The Sidecar" which is turkey and cheese and bacon which i think is yummy. they also have fried chicken (but not on a bun).

anyway, glad you got your fix!

Did somebody say bacon??? I am so there! That sounds so good!

The Ale House has great wings! Their burgers are OK but their buns overwhelm them (too big and doughy).

They did just get a new big flat screen TV at one end of the bar.

I too wish the place had better food because it has such a nice atmosphere.

Brooklyn BBQ joint on 6th avenue and 20th Street. Definite
bar atmosphere and bbq chicken sandwiches etc.

Subject: at least its cheap

200 5th avenue has really cheap, halfway-decent pub food, but they try a little too hard to be a real restaurant. They're a straight up bar, no matter how big their menu gets.
