BEWARE!!! stand alone ATM fraud

My wife just got hit in the checking account for over 2 grand!!! She used her debit card in an ATM in a bodega. Apparently the owner of the ATM(not necessarily the same as the owner of the bodega) can get an imprint of the card and w/draw the loot!

    Well, we don't know where it was. Our bank (HSBC) informed us that it was happening nationally and across multiple banks. But we really just stay local to NY most of the time. They encouraged us to use only bank ATMs. HSBC recovered all funds and did not charge any late fees on any bounced checks due to the debacle. whew! that was refreshing...

    It happened to us - we're HSBC customers. Only the ATM was is Canada, and my husband rarely uses an ATM, and then, only at the branch.

    Don't discount the fact that it may be an internal HSBC problem. Likewise, don't use any external ATMs.

    I've heard that HSBC seems to have been hit by a massive wave of fraudulent activity that they're overwhelmed by. Check your account if you're a HSBC customer.
