oshima

for those unfamiliar, oshima on 7th and berkeley is a really great sushi/japanese restaurant. i find the quality as good as blue ribbon (i know i've said this before) for a fraction of the cost.

i love blue ribbon too, but just as a treat once or twice a year.

anyway, oshima just underwent a remodel and just reopened on saturday. it looks really slick.

given the other places in the hood who renovated and seemed to close 6 months later, i thought i'd give this testimonial so you can at least try oshima and hope it flourishes.

i have no vested interest in this place, other than that i love the food.

I totally second that. Really terrific sushi, very nice delivery people, prices aren't scary.

They sent me a bottle of wine around the new year as a special treat for customers. Granted, it was green apple sake which will be sitting on my counter forever, but I still thought it was nice.

I'm a sushi fiend and I love Oshima. They have a great lunch bento box as well.

We ate there last night entirely because I read this thread.

It was really good and very reasonably priced. I drank a bottle of sake though and ended up falling asleep around 8:30, which was uber lame.

Anyway, the newly renovated space is really nice. Has a feng shui feel to it, with some tokyo sprinkled (those blue lights behind the bar). I'll go back, plus they seem to deliver everywhere in the slope!

answer me this- better than kiku? Food wise, not decor...

I think better than Kiku, definitely. Kiku seems more americanized to me, and oshima is more of a purist place. And, i think the fish is better quality (just by a bit) at oshima, and is cut better. And, the wasabi is of higher quality as well, IMO.

I do like some of Kiku's fancy rolls, though.

i just tried kiku for the first time recently, and i do prefer oshima.

the quality of fish does seem better at oshima and the colors of the food seemed more vibrant.

i thought kiku was perfectly fine, but i'd never choose it over oshima.

I've not tried Oshima because anytime I want sushi I can't resist walking all the way down to Flatbush for Geido.
Not only is the sushi fresh and delicious, but their weekend lunch bento box has to be one of the best deals in town.
The staff there is great and you leave feeling satisfied.

One of these days I will try Oshima and report back...thanks for the tip.

Does anyone know if Oshima delivers? (I am not too far from the movie theater)
I love Kiku, because they deliver. Geido rocks, but they don't deliver, and they are a hike from my place

Oshima's sashimi platter tastes better than Kiku's sashimi platter, but Kiku's is less money. When it comes to soup, Kiku has a better spicy seafood broth and Oshima puts more seafood into a not so flavorful broth. Kiku's menu strikes me as more creative and interesting than Oshima's food, but Oshima's food is amazingly fresh.

After being total Kiku Loyalists, my husband and I finally tried Oshima last night for the very first time-

The decor is great and very zen. The staff was super sweet.
I will still say I would rather eat at Kiku.
Everything just tastes better to me at Kiku.

I will still give Oshima a chance, but for now, staying true to Kiku (That's the nights we are not eating at Yama on Irving)

Oshima does deliver, although I'm not sure how far....
