apartment hunting advice

so i would like to get a place in prospect heights (the real prospect heights, not crown heights, not lefferts garden and not bed stuy!). craigslist is not helping me out very much. i remember looking a few months ago and seeing lots of studios pop up in good spots for around 1k on craigslist. anyone have any suggestions for finding apartments besides hunting online? i don't need a ton of space just a decent quiet studio apartment preferably within a 15 minutes walk to the 7th ave Q stop or close to the museum. any help would be appreciated.

You may be hard pressed at $1k for that area, but you could get lucky. If you aren't having good luck online, I would advocate taking a walk around the streets you like and looking for signs. There are usually a decent amount to call on.

we used Space Realty when we were hunting in PH. We got a spacious apt in PH proper for a great price - rent stabilized none-the-less!
They have exclusive rights to our building and the one across the street.

I was referring to that cause lots of post on craigslist say prospect heights but are actually in bed stuy, lefferts garden or crown heights. the "real" prospect heights has a zip code of 11238.

atlantic to eastern parkway, flatbush to washington. period.

I have the 11238 zip but am located between Grand and Classon on Prospect Place. I know there is a studio opening up in my building for about $850 and a 1 bedroom with separate kitchen for about $1100. I walk to the Q every morning and it takes approx 12 minutes, in bad weather I take the shuttle to Prospect and it's just as quick. It may not be prospect heights proper but I love it, the building is decent, everyone is neighborly and you can't beat the prices! Send me a private message if you're interested in getting in touch with the landlord.

I bet you want to avoid real estate brokers and their monstrous fees—but the brokers might be useful anyway. That's because you don't have to pay a broker for wasting their time… So if you have a broker show you some places in your price range, you can get an idea of where prices are at and what your $1,000 might get…

I have also had a pretty tough time finding a place in Prospect Heights. I've been looking for a one bedroom or decent sized studio. My price cap is about $1300. 85% of the postings on craigslist are outside of the highly contested prospect heights borders. Its actually very frustrating. If someone has any tips or knows of any vacancies , please let me know.

11238 is a superset. An address in the "real" Prospect Heights will be 11238, but all 11238 addresses are NOT Prospect Heights.

When I first started looking, I kept finding listings for places in Prospect Heights and then learned that it was Crown Heights. I found a great place though, but ended up not taking it because of the entrance off of the Street and close proximity to drug dealers. I'm still looking for the perfect place...

My zip is 11217 and I'm in Prospect Heights.

Oh no, not again...

Ahhh yes, once again . The reason for asking though is because if you read the description of Crown Heights then Prospect Heights boundaries are included in that description. Crown Heights description being Ralph Avenue to Flathush Avenue and Empire Blvd to Atlantic Avenue. That description would include the area from Eastern Parkway to Atlantic Avenue and Washington Ave to Flatbush Avenue. So there is a chunk of the Crown Heights description that is actually Prospect Heights.

BTW, I know where I consider Prospect Heights and am glad to know that the boundaries that I consider it are valid.

Well, you shouldn't be. 11217 should start a block west of Vanderbilt. Having said that, I don't doubt you necessarily. _Much_ stranger things have happened than the post office getting a bit wonky with a zip code border. Hell, there are a few zip codes in the midwest that actually span states. Stupid post office. Whereabouts are you, anyway? More data for the memory banks is always welcome. Here there be a rip in the postal code fabric.

Now that I said that out loud, it occurs to me that there is a triangle there between Flatbush, Atlantic, and whatever is escaping my mind that is one block west of Vanderbilt that would be 11217 and still Prospect Heights by most peoples standards. So forget everything and let me start again. But not now. I have a headache.

That triangle is between Flatbush, Atlantic and Carlton. The zip is 11217 and I think pretty much everybody calls it Prospect Heights. It sure isn't Park Slope and that's the only other thing I would imagine anyone calling it.

Broaden your search out to Franklin Ave. Actually now you can prob. get a decent place down to Bedford too. Just talk to the locals and get a feel for good and bad blocks.

Incidentally, I would rather be around Nostrand and St Johns than around Bedford and Franklin on it or Lincoln. But that is just me, and the area is definitely changing rapidly.
