I gotta say, Jet Blue isn't responsible, nor should they be, of lost or stolen items. Once your bag is out of sight, it is not just handled by Jet Blue, as they stated to you. It could have been the TSA or someone who works behind the scenes at JFK. My brother was a pilot and always said that even of you have a lock, someone can always get into it. "The locks keep the honest ones honest," was his standard line.

As for what you wrote here:

"When I flew back to JFK several days later I had to check my bag and I told the lady at the counter to have at it. I said, I've signed away my rights so if you feel like digging through it and helping yourself there is nothing I can do about it, so have fun. She didn't think I was funny and there was nothing in it that anyone could swipe so it arrived without incident."

....That was clearly not fair, as that woman had nothing to do with your lost item. Bitching at customer service will get you nowhere fast.

The only knowledge you've gained here, I think, is that you NEVER put valuable belongings in your checked luggage. I lug a video camera and still camera with me on the plane, along with anything I value and don't want out of my sight- why take a chance???

It's common sense not to place anything of value in your checked luggage. I don't see how this blog or any amount of complaining is going to change a fact of human nature: when faced with the chance to easily steal something of value and not get caught, a lot of people are going to do it.

It's unfortunate that the person is now out a camera, but from Jet Blue's perspective there is absolutely no proof that the camera was even in the bag to begin with. If they were to reimburse for lost valuable items, there would be no end to false claims. The only way to prevent it would be to fully inventory each bag on drop off and at claim, a delay and expense which I'm sure no one would want. The easy solution is just not to check items which will be attractive to thieves.

I had my camera stolen the last time (and I mean the VERY LAST time) that I flew American Airlines in 2000. It was so minor compared to the rest of the shit that happened to me on that trip that I didn't even care. For one thing, I was really glad just to get my luggage back two days later.

I sure did feel stupid for packing my camera in my luggage though.

I am also under the common logic that valuables don't get checked. Even in these post 9/11 times you can still carry on luggage of a decent size and what is important to you, whether it be the camera, the family jewels, you personal I.D, diamonds, medications or whatever just goes with you and is never checked.

I am sympathetic to the person who lost the camera but I can't get with damning a very good carrier based on the person's bad decision to check the luggage with the camera in it. Checked baggage can be opened and is, under the guise of security and it is just to tempting to the few employees who sucumb to the theivery ( a quality that is in all of us to some degree) when passengers make these items so available.

First of all - WHAT? If they are a Jet Blue employee (or contractor paid by Jet Blue (whatever) it sure is Jet Blue's responsibility.

Second of all - what does this have to do with Park Slope?

Disagree about the responsibility- completely. Name ANY business (restaurant, store, car service) that says they will take responsibility for YOUR lost or stolen items. If it goes out of your sight, tough luck.

I do agree about its Park Slope relevance, though.

Well the only connection is perhaps the poster lives in park Slope. So what? Probably the thread needs to be moved.
