Subject: Gardell's Garden

Anyone know if they're out of business? I've been trying to reach them for several days. They're phone calls are going to VM..which instructs you to leave a message..

He usually reopens for the season sometime in early April...he may be open this coming weekend for Easter lilies and cut flowers, but I think he takes off somewhere warm for the winter (usually leaves after Christmas).

hmm..I never new that..guess I've never purchased anything from him in the winter seaaon

I saw Gardel tonight and apparently, the Garden is closed for business permanently; after 20 years in the nursery business, Gardel has decided to develop the lot where the garden center stands currently and raise a 5-story residential building.

He may be holding a small spring plant sale in late April - a few plants and possibly a stock closeout sale (fertilizer, pots, window boxes, etc).

I'm very sad and not quite sure where I'll get my window box flowers and Christmas trees. :-(

He also said that he was checking the answering machine and could take a few small phone orders.

Where is this?

Gardel's is/was on South Portland Street between Fulton and Lafayette...next to Cafe Lafayette.

That's sad news. I always ended up in there once or twice a year.
Can you post when they have the closeout?

As soon as I know more about the sale, I will let you all know.

I will miss the flowers as well as the great, knowledgable advice...and a wonderful personality in the neighborhood.

What's wrong with more residential buildings in a residential neighborhood?

Density is good. Our area is well-served by transit, and the more people there are within walking distance, the more shops, restaurants, bars, etc will be able to survive here.

I'll miss Gardel; I bought many a plant from him. But development is (can be) good too.

I'll really miss Gardel. I have been buying plants, shrubs and trees from him for about 5 years now. I wish him well though and hope he makes a handsome profit with the development of the lot. The guy busts his hump with long hours with his business. I hope this sets him up well.

I think that after 20 years in the business, he's looking to maybe sell the lot and can get more for it developed (with a building) than in its current state.

Just a guess, though.

besides, I'm here already, and dont need anymore housing. I could use a place to buy plants and flowers though.

I'm the 4.43 poster. Like I said, I will really miss having Gardel and his garden store, but I frankly am happy to see that someone so hard working actually owns the lot. There is no true "shop" being torn down. If you ever bothered to have a good look, he has the framed in greenhouse type structure and ship/truck containers making up the structure. I will miss his business immensely, god knows I've spent a small fortune there; but I would venture to guess that he will do very well for himself and his family, so I wish him luck.

Gardel has a few spring flowers out for sale this weekend, possibly timed to coincide with Habana Outpost's Earth Day kickoff....FYI

I was on the block on Saturday. Gardell is GONE. *weeps*

I know it...so, so sad....... :-( I think they took the "building" down last week sometime. My window boxes even look sad.

have his plans changed, or is he still planning on returning once he gets the new building up?
