Here's a good NPR piece on a new paper from the Urban Institute about how iPods and other consumer technologies have given rise to increased street crime....

I thought people might be interested given the numerous threads on PH street crime targeting electric doo-dads...

Ooooo, I have an original 1st generation Walkman (in good working order, from 1980 or whenever it was that they came out)

I had a dream where I was listening to a tape based walkman - listening to one of my old radio shows, actually, and the music was all skinny puppy and front 242. I got mugged.

    I'm not kidding, seriously.

I keep hearing about "bunches of kids" attacking folks for their Ipods. So tell me, when these disgusting little predators get away from the victims with their stolen Ipod, how do they determine which scumbag gets to keep it? Do they then fight amongst themselves?

One of the first victims of IPOD muggery was our friend from NZ.

Does it have "Mega Bass" and auto-reverse?
Of course everyone knows that Aiwa rocked the best portable cassette players by the late 80s...

Carnivore, I used to own an AIWA cassette walkman back in the day. In fact, I think I was listening to that the time I got pickpocketed on a crowded bus in San Francisco. Ever since then, I never listen to any audio devices while on public transportation.

Oh and Bill C - I gotta say I love you for having a photo of Serge and Jane up. I love them AND their daughter.
