Question for Bike Riders in the Slope

I just ordered a bike--my first in NYC. I've been doing a lot of research, but the one question I can't seem to find and answer to is if the 42-77" gear length is going to make getting up the hills between the avenues (like 9th st from 4th ave to the park) murderous.

The bike is a lightweight folder (25 lbs) and I'm a slim, tall girl in good shape.

Or will I just end up with calves the size of watermelons?

I think you might be confusing the gearing issue a bit. Is is a single speed bike with a 42 tooth chainring?

77 gear inches (with a 42 tooth chainring) would imply a 15 tooth cog on the rear hub. I doubt there are any hills in brooklyn that you couldn't conquer with that setup and a bit of effort.

    edit: re-read your post...now i get it.... 42" - 77" gear inch range (42 is/was a common chainring size...and I'm tired :) ). I think you should be fine with low gearing of 42".

    Ok, cool.
Yeah, sorry. I should have made it clear that its a 3 speed. I'm still new to all this.

    Thanks!!

Anyone else have any anecdotal evidence I'll be ok?
