Problems with feral cats?

After successfully spaying and neutering the ferals on Bergen and Vanderbilt (http://blam.blogs.com/bergen_babies/) I'm looking for an area in Prospect Heights or Crown Heights that needs to be addressed.

Slope Street Cats has the ASPCA mobile clinic in mid-April and I'd like to fill it up with kitties from the neighborhood who need to be fixed. Do you know of any areas with unaltered feral cats who keep making babies? Let me know (PM me or leave a reply here) and we can come by to assess the situation and possibly get these buggers fixed.

Thanks!

Funny you should post this, I drove by a lot today on Park Place between Bedford and Rodgers where local folks put out cans of food for the cat population living in a car in a fenced lot. Judging by the number of cans there are probably 4-5 cats living in there (maybe more since its a spot to get food regularly). I was thinking it would be a good site for a TNR project.

Its on the north side of the street next to the real estate office that never seems to be open.

I also know that there were a litter of feral kittens rescued late last year on Pacific between Nostrand and New York in the lot behind the Halal meat market. You might want to check there as well since a number of folks on that block have cats that were born there. Seems like a hot spot for local cats.

    hi Lulu's Momma!

That's a very kind offer! This thread about a local colony was posted recently; don't think anyone ever addressed it:

thanks, laura b.! a couple of us took the TNR class but still have no where to "store" the cats during the waiting period. looks like the 'hood is going to come together and make a difference. (for real.) thanks, everyone!

    Great news!

For storage space, check with the folks at Neighborhood Cats, if you haven't already. They can sometimes hook you up.

And thank you! for helping these furry little souls...

We will be doing TNR in the area that Laura B. suggested in April. Thanks for the suggestion! We went to investigate the area today. We noticed that one cat was very pregnant and we ended up trapping her tonight in about 15 seconds flat. She will be going to the vet tomorrow. We will be going back on Friday night to try to get prego #2. We thought that we shouldn't wait until April to spay those two. We received tons of support from the people over in that area and are very excited about the project. It feels great to help more PH feral cats. We will keep you posted!

That's a great thing you're doing. At least you can keep the numbers of new babies down and help the kitties out there have a better quality of life.

I went all of 2 hours on Saturday without any fosters, it was awful! Kensington Kitties was set up across from work so I went over to tell them what a great home Sox and Gemini found. There was this little grey 5-6 month old kitten cowering in a cage all freaked out. They told me he didn't have a foster home yet and hated being kept in the cage (due to how many cats they have now). I took one look at him and said, "He's damaged, I'll take him!"

Anyway, he is dying to make friends with my cats, Mumps and Grumps are still a bit unsure of him though. If you come across a cat or kitten that really likes being around other cats I could take on one more. Squeaker would absolutely love a friend. Let me know.

    Hey Vanilla,

What did the pregnant cat look like? We trapped one that we thought was pregnant but "she" happened to be a grossly overweight male cat. I think that they get a lot of table scraps around there. We saw an all white cat that we thought could have been pregnant. Is that the one? If we know which one it is then it's easier for us to try to get it. Thanks for watching out for them! We do have free neuter slots on April 18th. I'm not sure if she can wait that long or not.

We trapped 8 feral cats in the area that Laura B. suggested. We feel that there are two cats left but unfortunately they are rather elusive. These cats have daily feeders and we will help to get them shelters next winter. They are a well taken care of bunch of cats. If only we could have done something about all of the raccoons, too ...
