Dog Adoptions

My wife and I are planning to adopt a dog in the near future. I was hoping that people could share their experiences with dog adoptions in Brooklyn and the NYC area - opinions, results, etc. So please post away and include where and when you adopted if possible. Thank you!

i went to the pound on 110th street in manhattan. i saw the pooch i wanted, filled out some forms, and picked her up the next day after she got fixed. she rules.

We found our dog through petfinder.com - eventually adopting from a rescue in New Jersey, but I don't recall the name. They were nice enough.

But since then I've looked at Sean Casey's animal rescue a few times considering a second dog. He's based out of brooklyn and many of the available dogs are kept at a pet supply store in Kensington. The rescue has a very friendly staff - they even rescue reptiles and millipedes - that's dedication.

His shelter shows up in petfinder searches, or you can good sean casey animal rescue and find their website.

I got my cats from the Brooklyn Animal Care and Control and I saw the dogs there. I highly recommend going there as they are a KILL shelter, so these guys only have so much time left, and you feel really good knowing that you literally saved them from the hands of death.

I definitely recommend BARC in Williamsburg. You can volunteer to walk the dogs in the morning or evening, get to know them, and then if you make a connection with one you can adopt right from BARC. They're a great org, they have a pet shop that subsidizes the shelter. They get animals from all over, but mostly from kill shelters and local tips about animals in need.
