Mugged on Park Place Underhill

4/23/08- Park Pl. between Underhill and Vanderbilt (closer to Underhill)

I was punched in the back of the head and knocked down by 3 teens at 4:30pm. They stole my ipod, then fled after I managed to get back up and yell for help. Not before punching me repetedly in the head, though. They were local, for sure. All wearing white tees and shorts.
And I know that they stalked me for about a block and a half, because I remember seeing them in a big group on Washington minutes earlier. It's a good bet they knew the area around Underhill would be clear of pedestrians around that hour. Be careful.

    That sucks. Did you file a police report? If not, you should.

    Glad to hear you're ok

    Sorry to hear about this...I didn't realize until recently that there was increased gang violence in our neighborhood. Now, I've heard of incidents between Underhill and Washington on Lincoln, St. Johns and Park Place.

    iPod mugging != gang violence

    And I'm not sure that this sort of thing has _increased_, at least not a lot. I think it has failed to decrease as much as it has in most other parts of the city. Someone want to dig up the stats and see if I'm making that up?

    Resist the urge to walk down the street at any freaking time and listen to your iPod! Seriously. As sad as that is, it's reality, for now.

    How dare localguy step outside at the ungodly hour of 4:30 PM?

    localguy, report it to the cops and you can write it off on your taxes.

    Cops, where are you? Can't you step out and put an end to this crap that keeps happening at the same location?

    The only thing that really bothers me is the fact that it happened in broad daylight.( I mean, the fact that it even happened is the initial bummer, that's a given.)

    But this is not the work of gangs, in the traditional sense. This is a group of kids, hanging on the corner cause they got nothing better to do. Maybe there is some sort of, "yo, my brother's Crips, yo. Stomp dat guy and I'll put in for you."...but I doubt it.

    Unfortunately, there really isn't enough extra curricular activity available to the teens in the neighborhood (a long-going, nation-wide issue, actually). Sad but true, we do not, as a community or a nation, really focus enough on our burgeoning youth to foster and re-direct all that new-found energy and emotion they carry.
