Plans for Brooklynian

Roadmap, as of today at least:

1. keep the boards as they are, layout wise.
2. fix formatting problems with current boards related to poor layout. (eg, main table needs a MAX-WIDTH so it doesn't sprawl all over the screen on widescreen monitors)
3. add drop-down menu to header so people can instantly link to boards or whatever other resources we have.
4. Add in the mouseover mod that pops up the topic preview.
5. bring the blog back to the front page so people can get a snapshot of new posts on all boards.
6. SET UP CATEGORIES so we can organize the posts in different ways, eg, one area that has all posts on health regardless of home board; one area that has all posts on pets regardless of whether they are in neighborhood boards or the brooklyn pets board, etc.
7. again, even though we'll have blogs and alternate layout pages, "the boards" will stay essentially the same, with the exception of style tweaks to address formating problems described above.

can you also get rid of the horrible "unrated and uncut" slasher fest advertising?

Uh Oh. I'm afraid! I love this board! What if some random thing is under a category I wouldn't read? Will you have categories like, "Stroller Wars" "Public Urination" "Why I hate/love it here now/10 years ago." etc?

    Chipster,

Nothing is changing with the boards.

The categories would be a new feature in a different location from the board posts. If we create a category "stroller wars" and categorize existing posts there, it won't have any effect on the regular boards.

We're just saying that Brooklynian will eventually have standard blog-style categories. That's all.

The newest look forum home page repeats itself every time you click on a heading - seems like a lot of wasted real estate to me.

    AGREED. It's rather disturbing.

hey DH, love the new links above the forum listings -- for PMs, etc. i think they're much easier to spot than the old way.

but did the "rules" just disappear, or can i just not find it?

I really miss the rating stars. Is it possible to get them back as well?

I'm not sure what you mean - the only change is that we added the drop-down menu - the actual width of the header is the same, if not smaller, than the drop-down we had on Friday, since the flickr photo is constrained to not expand the page.

So actually it's not any more costly in terms of real estate, unless you are saying something else that I don't understand.

THE RULES are now under the COMMUNITY tab. Unless that's an issue, I'd like to keep it there, as removing the top menu item makes the page cleaner.

It's on the list, but not a priority. We don't have enough resources/people to do everything we want to do.

How about better search results that have something other than Brooklynian.com | Brooklyn Blog and Message Boards :: View topic ... for every single result?

That does kind of suck, doesn't it? I thought this was Google's doing, but you just gave me some ideas. It may be possible for us to change that without any change on Google's end.

This just in from the advertising agency:
We are going to make the switch on the creative on our backend. You
should be receiving an approval email today.

Hope their "switch on the creative" wasn't to go from adults to...kids? Are those ads even legal?

I was told we'd get an email on approval to switch the campaign, and we haven't seen it yet.

What I'm looking at now is a grimacing boy with a torn shirt and smudges, alternating with a stern-looking girl with a dirty dress. Is your question whether that is legal?

It's that they look like they're trying to make the girl and boy look underage (doubt the actors are) and beaten up. That's what I meant by wondering if it was legal.

Or maybe I'm reading the images differently in light of the same site's previous ad....?

Thanks, by the way, for following up on this. I meant to add that to my previous post.

I'm chalking it up to that. The images themselves, devoid of context, actually are milder -- it could be scenes from a playground fight for lunch money or something. Not that that's like petting puppies either, but at least it's a whole other realm from severing someone's achilles tendon.
