Health Food Store in WT?

Moving to WT on Saturday
I am a huge fan of Back to the Land on 7th
Anything similar to this in WT?

One takes the bus back to Back to the Land?

There's some reasonable produce at the bodega type markets, a tiny bit of organic produce at Key Food, supplements and soy milk on PPW. But for consistent quality and selection, you're going back to Park Slope.

We end up taking the subway to Whole Foods or combining a trip there with any errands in Manhattan.

Where will you be living in WT? (Toward what end of the WT elbow)

I am not sure where WT starts or ends
but I will be on Prospect Ave and i believe the cross is 11th ave?

Sounds like you're going to be living right across from Key Food. Not the happiest place on earth, but you can't beat the convenience!

what specifically are you looking for? there used to be a small store called "Traditions" on PPW, but they merged back in with the bodega next store (same owner). They kept some of the vitamins, teas, soaps, etc.

For food, you can go to Pumpkins on 8th Ave near 11th Street.

There's no big place where you'll find everything. Personally, I'd go to Fairway before Whole Foods (cheaper).

We shop at Costco, amazingly, they have a nice selection of organic products. And, if you go on Friday, the lines aren't too long. For other healthy food, not found at costco, we bite the bullet and go to Union Market on 7th Ave and 13th St(?)

I heard rumors that a Trader Joe might open in Carroll Gardens (Court and Atlantic). Long trip from WT, but more accessible than Fairways

Try Traditions on 5th ave, between 10th & 11th St, they are a lot cheaper then Back to The Land, as is Vitamin Shop on Flatbush and 4th ave

We bite the Union Market bullet regularly.

Just don't look for the Traditions sign. As posted above, they merged back into the food store/bodega next door. I think it's called Stop Shop. There's a little banner announcing Traditions is in there, but you won't find a store called Traditions on PPW.

Ive lived in the area for decades and while Key Food has improved over the years, I'm very surprised it hasn't caught up in terms of getting better produce and an improved organic section. There certainly is a demand for it.

Key Food is good for the odd run but Fairway is where its at.

It's too bad. If they had it, we'd be happy to give them lots and lots of our grocery dollars.

BTW, the former Traditions (now Shop Smart) sux for veggies. The health foody stuff is in the back of the store -- it's where I get my soy milk when I don't get it from Fresh Direct or Whole Foods.

(No car here, so Fairway isn't so convenient.)

re: WT Key Food. I drive past it and go to Fairway or maybe C-Town or Key food on 5th Ave. I've talked to the woman that owns the WT Key Food about things that I want to buy in the store and it seemed to me that she could care less.


The other option not mentioned is the Flatbush Food Coop on Cortelyou Rd. The brand new store is clean and well stocked. You don't need to be a member to shop there but can join and get a discount if you want.

Agree about the attitude at Key Food. I have shopped there for 10+ years and they never seem to care if you ask them to order something. I'll only go if it's convenient now - for "real" shopping, I hit Fairway

I have now gone to the WT Key Food several times for random things (paper towels, water, cantaloupe, etc)
It seems ALRIGHT
I lived across the street from Union Market on 6th ave for a year, and got spoiled. I kinda like the Key Food- No pretense, just a grocery store.

I guess it will have to be a weekly run to Back To The Land-

it's funny. I was just lamenting the lack of health food options. My car is being worked on for a long long time and I didn't realize how dependent I was or how much easier it made things. Now I never have anything in the house. I've just been too busy to make lots of trips. I live in Kensington so you can get some things at Golden Farm (Church Ave.) but NOT organic veggies and produce.

To go to the Food Coop/Back to the Land in Park Slope or Flatbush Food Coop/natural store in Ditmas Park are BOTH treks and to bring back lots of packages by bus or foot is a PAIN.

I sometimes call a car service one way but I find that sort of a pain too.

i went to the Flatbush Food Co-op for the first time today. it was lovely -- so clean! it was all organic; i was hoping for a mix of options since organic does equal $$.

getting there was a snap. hopped on the B68 on PPSW to cortelyou road, then walked about 5 short blocks. looked around, bought a few things, then went back the way i came. i had four bags of stuff with me, and i didn't find it inconvenient at all to ride the bus. if i decide to make the trip there a regular activity, i can always bring a cart.

i recommend checking it out; and remember, unlike the PS co-op, you don't have to be a member to purchase things there!
