What is that noise??

I live in North Slope and fairly often I hear this high-pithed sound that, for lack of a better description, sounds like Sonar. I'm not saying that's what it is -- just trying to describe. It's like a high pitched "ping" noise that happens every 45 seconds or so. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Did someone park their submarine on 3rd street??? Just kidding. But for real, it's driving me insane. I feel like if I at least knew what it was, it wouldn't bug me so much.

I don't know what they call it but it might be this air fan thingy that's on top of a house. if the wind is blowing it will spin so sometimes they need to be oiled. not talking about a fan or airvent, it's sort of like a little dome with fan blades and air holes/slats and sits on a roof top (look out on top of the buildings nest to you, you might see one spinning).
I had a similar noise and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. i told someone once and they told me what it probably was and i looked out the window and viola!

Maybe a neighbor is playing a submarine game ?

    In any event,
    i suggest a white noise/background noise thingy
for nights your ac is not in being used.

Have you checked your smoke detectors? When the batteries start dieing they make a horrible, high-pitched bleep to remind you find those Duracells. It might be a detector in your hallway which may be why you can't exactly figure out where the sound is originating.
