$7000/month apt rental - Sunday NYT Real Estate article

I was already enjoying this section way more than usual, with the "wreck" apt they envisioned fixing up in the cover story . . . then . . . the charming feature about the Slope family renting for more than $7000 a month.

Is this not totally beyond the pale??

i'd just want someone to shoot me right in the head if i'm ever stuck in the type of financial purgatory where i can't afford to buy but am willing to pay 7K for rent a month....

I think they can afford to buy, but they were just pressed for time. I can't decide if it's a good or a bad thing to apparently have so much freaking money that I'd sign a lease for $7K like it is nothing. :shock:

I have to admit, even for me, being a guy who could probably "afford" to do exactly what they're doing, this article was beyond disgusting.

It wasn't so much the part about renting the apt for over $7000/month (why can't they just tell us how freakin much they are paying... I'll bet it's more like $9000/month). I mean, they probably made a cool $1 million or so on the brownstone they sold and then bought the farmhouse for only half as much.

Anyhow, it was the part about the guy taking a year off from his career to just find himself and then being able to just turn around and pick up a gig as an Executive Senior Creative Director (or whatever the title was).

I hate those people. I seriously HATE those people.

pitu, I KNOW! The RE section on Sunday was ridiculous. $7,000 a month?! And COMPLAINING about the space not being your "taste"? Also, that "wreck" apartment that had to be fixed up... Jesus. There was nothing wrong with the apartment that some paint and a floor guy couldn't fix. Meaning, normal pre-move fixing-up, that's all. Who are these people who would view such a place as a "wreck," and how do I get some of their money?

I keep wondering who I can blame for the housing bubble -- greedy real estate agents? Greedy apartment sellers (though I own a co-op too, and would have to sell it for as much as possible, in order to afford someplace else)? Greedy real estate developers and all their many "luxury condo" buildings? Greed, in general? Where oh where can I direct my hate?

No one is to blame... It's an open market, it's subject to supply and demand- value is determined by the amount that the buyer is willing to pay and no one else.

Who cares if rich people want to spend their money? Seriously, why do people feel so personally insulted? And why the knee-jerk hatred of money? These people don't seem particularly likable, but nor do they have any direct impact on our lives. So who cares?

I think the whole "money is inherently evil" philosophy is kind of juvenile(see reaction to Miguel). It reminds me of the criticism of Bloomberg for being wealthy. He became a self-made billionaire? Didn't hurt me in the process. Good for him. I don't see what's so noble about claiming to hate money and people who have it.

My reaction had nothing to do with money being evil- I'm a banker. Beyond that, I'm not simple enough to believe in something so sweeping as 'money is evil'...
I see the 'I think that most people are stupid enough to believe overly simplistic views' line of thought to be insulting and simplistic in itsself. I believe that most people are smarter than that.
My 'rolling eyes' post was me poking fun at Miguel for what I felt was a tacky post. Were I to post the same thought as Miguel, I would have started it with 'whether or not one can afford it...' as opposed to 'even though I can afford it...'

Yeah... im a banker too. There is nothing wrong with money. The only thing I had a problem with is Miguel's obnoxious way of presenting his view.

I don't get what was so offensive about Miguel's post. I thought he was making the point that he wasn't bashing the people out of jealousy, not that he was bragging. It was relevant. If anything, I think we have too many taboos about discussing how much money we have.

I am, however, deeply, grievously offended by emoticons.

I sometimes forget how seriously rotten housing is also going for more than it should. I was under the illusion that if you were willing to live in a double zone* in Queens, rent would be cheap.

*Note to people younger than me from outside of NYC, I'm talking about a commute that involves the train to the bus, which used to cost 2 fares

Nope! I moved here from Queens where a 2 bedroom out in West Bumblefuck near the end of the line plus a bus was still about the same as I'm paying to live here which is closer to everything. The market is completely rotten.

Man, you guys need to chill out. I put "afford" in quotes to lighten it up, as if to say yeh maybe I could afford it, but I don't have a hole in my head, so I'd never do it. And I certainly wouldn't let the NYT write it up and post a big fat picture of me in the paper after all that whining. At least Linus got it, being the somewhat level-headed guy that he is.

Money is clearly a huge taboo on this board. I wasn't trying to rub it anyone's face and I guess I'm just not sensitive enough to predict how worked up people get about this stuff. But, I'll try to be more "tactful" in the future.

why would anyone pay $7,000.00/month for an apt---for that, they could live in a house. its not even as though you are in the center of things in park slope(tho i know it does have its own community) but in no way is it manhattan!

i think the housing situation is bad in NYC cause many landlords think it easier to sit on empty apt buildings and just wait for neighborhoods to get gentrified.

many of us in rent-stabilized or rent controlled apts are holding onto them for dear life.
