air conditioner disposal

Does anyone know how you are supposed to dispose of a broken air conditioner??? Since it has freon gas in it, I believe there is something you need to do, etc. (not just put it out in the regular trash?) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Call 311. They'll set up an appointment for sanitation to come and empty out that gas, curbside in front of your house. Then I think they either take it away or you leave it out for the regular pick up.
