NO FLYERS signs for PH?

you know those red signs that people in park slope have on their gates, saying 'no flyers, menus, etc.'? how do people feel about doing something like that here in PH? would you pay a buck for a sign like that? would you put it in front of your house/building?

The more important question for me: do they work?

just based on what i've seen, i'd say yes. i don't have hard figures on that, but i'll try to find out.

I printed out a page on the computer, cut it down a bit, put it in a small plastic sleeve and hung it on my gate about 2 months ago. We haven't gotten any flyers since then. (Occasionally some business cards will be left.) So, in answer to the question "do they work?" - Yes, they work beautifully!!!!

Yes, I would pay a buck. Yes, I would put it on the house. I think it's a great idea. I don't want to put up one of the Slope ones since we're in PH, but I've been wanting one for months. Should we spearhead this project?

Also, I do have plenty of graphics programs - I could slap something together if someone can recommend a size.

i've been working with the PH neighborhood council to get this going. so far cost is the biggest factor, but if there's interest, that helps! i'll post more here when i know more.

Somebody's already doing something like this in PH--on Sterling, near Flatbush.

Are there some kind of, ummmm... ramifications that I'm not thinking of? Is there some reason that we can't make a small sign, .pdf it, email it to those interested and let them print it on their own?

I don't think so. Then all that someone needs to do is get it laminated and attached to the fence.

that's certainly doable - though it ought to be laminated in some way to protect it from the elements.

I'm interested (Prospect Pl. and Vanderbilt Ave). But what I really want to know is how or where you get those permanent plastic zip-closure thingies that go around the fence or gate and through holes you punch in the laminated mini-sign. Any suggestions?

Try Staples - that's where I got mine.

I had to laminate some stuff for the CSA today and I did it at Staples. Cost is about $2.20 for a 8 1/2 x 14" (legal size) lamination sleeve. They have a DIY lamination machine on premises. If someone wants to design the card (should be several up on a legal sheet) I can print them at work and laminate several sheets. I'd be glad to give them out and then someone else can take care of the next print/lamination round.

The plastic thingies are called rip ties. They're also available at most hardware stores. Our sign has been up for a week or two and works pretty well.

Here's a straightforward one that was [un]inspired by the PS version. I would rather do one with a Brooklyn Bridge image (more BK universal), but I haven't had the time to search for an image without copyrights.

i'd like to see a more minimalist one--simple text, no graphics. i like the big "no."

and what do folks think of adding spanish and korean? might help get the message across to the people who leave the crap.

Well geez, that's no fun! If that's what you're after, do it with a word processor. Besides, branding is important - graphics/logos are more instantly recognizable. Being seen as one of many is much more powerful than being seen as one nut with a sign.

If I'm not mistaken, "no" is the most universal word in the world. Also, if one were to go the multilingual route, a lot more than spanish and korean in necessary in this borough. To imply that it's only spanish and korean speakers littering about is a bit offensive.

Unless you're Asian, I doubt that you could personally tell a Korean from a Laotian from a Thai from a Filipino. I don't have too much faith in your ability to discern between a Spanish-speaking Mexican and a Native American from Arizona either.

I think the sign is great! Can (no) "solicitations" be added? Or would that just clutter things up? I'm also not sure what the actual size is... it might help to have the dimensions. Thanks WhyFi!

i think that's definitely the right idea. i think we should add the PH neighborhood group's url - let me get that and i'll pass it along to whyfi.

FYI, the plastic things are called Zip-ties if anyone is looking for them at the hardware store. (Rip-ties are velcro for camera cable etc, and wouldn't work for this purpose at all!)

excellent point. if you're going to impute bigotry on my part, it's certainly fair to presume my ignorance too.
