is worth the walk from wherever. I got the following yesterday-
1.2 lbs of apples (which are crisp and sweet)
0.25 lb of baby bellas
over 1lb of jalepenos
a large plastic "clam shell" of spinach leaves

for $5.19. $5.19!!! I pay $2.99 MINIMUM for the same amount of spinach at the cheapest produce place on 7th. I also noticed the asparagus was 2.99 a lb while its 3.99 at the korean market on 7th and its usually 4.99 at union market.

Just a heads up. I hate making salads for dinner and spending $30 on produce so this might actually make it cost effective to NOT eat out!

Are the fruits and veggies organic?

I doubt it. I didn't really pay attention.

Be sure NOt to go the one in the middle of the block, between 14th and 15th street. That one is way overpriced and veggies are gross. Only go to the one on the corner of 15th and 5th ave.

Even though it's outside the nabe, it's hard to beat Rossman's at 3rd ave & 26th or so. I haven't seen stuff that cheap in a while. Definitely worth checking out.

Rossman's? Is that the one under the Gowanus?

no. on 3rd ave at 26th, under the bqe.

That's what I meant. I confuse BQE and Gowanus :)

If you have a car, that veggie store is worth checking out. We shop there all the time, but we'll give the store on 5th a benefit of a doubt, thanks!

Just got back from the 15th and 5th one- I gots:

    the same package of spinach
    1 cucumber
pack of 8 nice tomatoes (for $1.50- what???)
    Broccoli
    3 lemons
asparagus (the thin ones, my personal fav)
    2 peaches
    organic eggs

    Total: $16 something

Not bad....but I was surprised that it was that much, honestly. I think the eggs pushed me over ($3.99, but that's cheap for organic eggs.)

Damn. Key Food on 7th Ave. charges $5.19 for a small bag of rotten spinach...no exaggeration.

i'm telling you, even if you take a $7 arecibo ride to rossman's you'll still do better. in march they had meyer lemons on sale, 5 for $1.

(and i have gone to the produce place on 15th/fifth, and it's super cheap. but this place is cheaper)

oh no -- the produce market below the yoga studio on 15th and 5th was closed today.

I living in the neighborhood for 4 years, I have never seen them close during the day. They usually close around 8-9. 4pm today, closed.

    I hope everything is ok.

hmm not sure. I have been there on new years eve, xmas day, 4th of july. They are always open in some form.

Hopefully they just closed early. The one down the block from it is awful.

it looks like they are renovating the space. They are gutting the inside and installing new ac units on the outside.

Looks like they caught on to the changing demographics of the neighborhood and going to turn a bit more upscale.

i don't see why people are so excited about Rossman's. i've been there several times and they never seem to have much fruit, mostly potatoes and onions. i love my potatoes like any good irish girl, but i need pears, kiwis, etc. i'll have to go by the market on 15th.

jane_birkin, then you should go again! berries galore! often purple and orange cauliflower! 9 kinds of melons and stone fruits. cheap kirbys.

    the place rocks.

Will the produce stand on 15th Street and 5th Avenue ever open again? It was all boarded up today.

Rossman's is fine, but it might be out of the way unless you have some XXX DVDs to return under the bridge on 3rd Avenue.

That sounds like the makings of some really spicy applesauce. :)

What did you do with over a pound of jalapenos?

My boyfriend eats them raw with every meal (breakfast included.) We go through at least a lb in 4 days. He's a machine.

He eats serranos raw too. He's a freak. Tip- DON'T kiss someone who's eaten hot peppers within 45 minutes!
