I'm here too, alone (Mom's too sick to visit, as planned). First, if anyone knows where I can do volunteer work on Christmas Day, please let me know. Second, if anyone has any New Year's Eve suggestions, throw those out too. Freddy's is looking like the path of least resistance right now.

If you are looking to volunteer I would suggest NYCares. They always have a bunch of opportunities.

There's also CHIPS in PS (soup kitchen-I think it's on 5th Av???).
On the lighter side, check out the fireworks at GAP at midnight, New Year's Eve.
I wish I didn't have to leave town for Xmas - especially since I'm not sure how I'm gonna get to Penn Station tomorrow... I'm thinking LIRR.

anyone looking to do volunteer work on christmas day can volunteer to take my place at my inlaw's xmas dinner in queens. I doubt they'd notice the difference, and it would free up my afternoon and evening for some much needed relaxation.

Queens? Doesn't that require a passport?

Okay, the question begs for a little self-promotion on my part, though both suggestions require going to neighboring neighborhoods.

On January 1, I am putting together a Griot's Birthday at Dakar restaurant in Clinton Hill. Dakar serves nice Senegalese food, and it's the birthday of my African brother Famoro Dioubate. He is a djeli (a.k.a. griot or traditional West African bard) from Guinea, and he's an amazing balafon player, and his birthday is January 1, so it all seemed like a good combo. There's no cover, but you are welcome to through money with wild abandon at the performers.

Dakar is at 285 Grand Ave or online at http://dakarcafe.net/.

On January 7, our group Kakande, lead by Famoro, will play at Barbes in Park Slope. We will play the classical repertoire of the ancient empire of Mali on balafon, cello, flute, guitar, congas and vocals.

Barbes is located on 9th just east of 6th Avenue and online at http://barbesbrooklyn.com/
