Midwife advice?

This is more of a Brooklyn Kids board post, but the good ol' PH board is so darn reliable...

Found out over the weekend that hubs and I are expecting our first kidlet (yay! :D ) and I'm really interested in having a midwife rather than a strict obstetric birth team (not a high-risk pregnancy, healthy so far). I've got an appt w/Park Slope Midwives early next month. Anyone used them for childbirth? Used another midwife you loved? Got any advice for a newbie?

Thanks, bullyboy! I'm super excited and super terrified all at the same time. I'm thinking about how I tortured my parents as a teenager and figuring this is when I'll pay for it.

    Hi,
I'm at PS Midwives, due in 5 weeks. I went with them because I was already using the practice for my regular gyno needs, liked them, and didn't want to start interviewing a bunch of unknowns. Sometimes visits are brief, but I always get to ask questions. The only real downside is that the midwife I've had most of my appointments with and have gotten to know, Kristin, is the only one that doesn't attend deliveries. I've just started every other week appt instead of once a month so I'm hoping to see the other 3 more.

A midwife who doesn't attend deliveries. That sounds like a great career.

Kristin doesn't attend deliveries because she wants to be able to spend more time at home with her young son. :) I suspect she also handles a lot of the paperwork and such for the office. She also handles the major annual and medical exams.

I used PSM for my pregnancy - my daughter's 14 weeks old now - and was pleased with the whole experience. The midwives are really good - I liked them all, and knew that any of the 3 delivering midwives would do a great job. I ended up needing a c-section due to fetal distress, and really was glad to have my midwife there as one of my advocates.

I'd be glad to answer any questions that you might have, if I know anything. :)

    Oh... and congratulations!

I have gone to brooklyn birthing center, on the Q line, but it's a hike. We are moving to ditmas at some point so it made sense. I really like it there, and the care has been amazing.

Congratulations!! Very exciting stuff is about to happen. I LOVED being pregnant- it was fun anticipating this special person. My pregnancy was bliss, delivery was less so. I'll spare you the details, but long story short, my only regret is that I didn't go the midwife route.

Someone recommended Clemintine Midwifery to me after the birth for continuing well woman care. I haven't been but if I weren't moving, I'd probably be going there. Worth checking out as an alt to PS midwives.

I'd heard good things about Clementine too. My decision was made much easier for me, though: PSM took my insurance and Clementine didn't. :)

Raulism and meganlibrarian, thanks for the PSM info! I'm really looking forward to my first visit. I'm chomping at the bit until next month. It's fantastic that PSM takes my insurance. What a relief!
