Alternate Side of Street Parking

It is a nefarious plot by the city to extract as much money in terms of fines from 'dirty' neighborhoods. On designated days, one side of the street must move its cars for a period of time to allow street sweeping. One some streets you can double-park on the opposite side until the period is over, then move your car back. Other streets (Plaza St as an example) you must find a spot to stick your car as you can't double-park. Fine for not moving your car: $45. Fine for double parking too early and the traffic cop is in a shitty mood: $75. About 15 minutes before Alternate ends, people who are normally cordial and friendly to each other become cynical foes who will do anything to keep from having to park more that 1 block from their front door. Some neighborhoods have ASS 1 day a week per side. Some have (like PH) have it 2 days a week. Plaza St W is one day a week for example. Plaza St E is 2 days a week per side. It is amazing how 250 feet make all the world of difference in terms of street cleanliness. I guess we are filthier over here. Hrm?

It is another means by which the city takes money from it's poor and middle class residents.

They will ticket you even if they don't clean the streets.

It's a racket. The city knows this, as does everyone involved from the meter maid to the judge.

You can't do anything about it either except gripe (see above) so just go with it.

Well, I sort of agree and disagree, I've lived in parts of Queens where there is no alternate side of the street parking. And ironically, it's really hard to find a parking spot there because no one moves their car from September to May. The first beautiful weekend in spring there's a blue haze of exhaust fumes over Astoria from cars that have lain idle all winter.

On the other hand, the alt side of street schedule in Bed-Stuy means that I have to move the car pretty much every day; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are different days. In Park Slope it's only Monday, Friday on some blocks and Tues Thursday on others. I could live with alt side parking rules if they made it only consistenly two days in the outer boroughs.

So why did Queens (last I checked, a part of NYC) have no alt parking? The fact that some outer borough hoods have four days a week, some have two and some have none is wrong.

Was the part of Queens you lived in more affluent than the part of Bed Stuy you're in?

Sounds like a headache...glad I don't have a car here.

I think at one time someone posted the reasons why we have more days than others and I think it had to do with how clean our streets were. If we were to keep the sidewalks and streets cleaner I think we can have less alternate days. I lived in Boro Park and we only had alternate on Mon and Thur. Maybe one of the mods can locate that thread?

my brother-in-law just got slapped with a double-parking ticket at the end of ASS today. ASS ended at 2PM, the ticket was given at 2:03. $115! This is total BS.

Appeal it. You will win. The time stamp is everything. You have to go down there though and stand it that god awful line.

EDIT: After reading the the post again, the fine was for double parking. Eat the ticket. You'll NEVER win. :evil:

I know I'll never win and it was technically after the ASS time was over.

Here's a little trick to save a few bucks for anyone who doesn't know. Appeal EVERY ticket online at www.nyc.gov, even if you know you won't win. They will send you a letter offering for you to pay a reduced fine. If you don't pay it then they send it to a judge who either dismisses it or charges you the full amount.

So even if you can't win you can always get the fine reduced just for filling out the form online.

The double parking thing is a bitch. They "allow" people to double park during ASSC but it you are one minute late moving your double parked car back they give you a ticket.

If your happen to have your car blocked in by one of these double parked cars they will do nothing.

Didn't Exxon not pay it's fines for the Valdez disaster because it was on appeal?

Again the "little guy" gets screwed.

Considering we have threads about people who actually throw garbage out of their windows, I'm not shocked that we're targeted for more cleaning than other areas.

Please note that I am not arguing the BS fine racket the city has going.

i might be wrong, but it this not another case of people in richer neighbor hoods being able to break the law? or is it a new law? i just remember being in harlem a few years ago and seeing all the double parked cars (making room for street cleaning) with tickets on the hood.. i do not remember the details, so maybe they were a couple minutes late moving back or something... but my point is, isn't double parking against the law even in the case of street cleaning?

Yep double parking is against the law all the time, even when ASSC is in effect. Yet get blocked in by one of the double parked cars and the cops will do nothing.

Oh, and I'm not saying that these rules aren't in effect in richer hoods, it's just that richer people can afford the $200+ a month it takes to keep a car in a garage, which, if you get 2 tickets a month, would be worth it.

That was a terrifying episode. Part of the reason, I think, that I don't find Seinfeld all that funny. It's far too frightening to be funny.

The area in Astoria that I am familiar with that doesn't have alternate side of the street parking also doesn't have street cleaning. They opted out of it and pledged to keep the area clean themselves. It seems to work.

its in all areas of brooklyn. even clean areas where people dont throw garbage out of their windows lol. its just total bs to get money not about actual cleaning.
