Subject: lia's ices

have you guys been over to lia's? the ices rock, really amazing.

they have this sugar free italian ice that we love--try it, it's fantastic! but, i've twice asked two different servers what they use to sweeten this ice and i've been told that it's simply lemons and water, that's it.

there is NO WAY there is nothing in these ices that sweeten them (why do i feel like this is that seinfeld episode where they keep going to the diet place and start gaining weight?)

can someone find out what's in the yummy ice???

I've been there a few times, but only got their mango ice & sorbet, and blueberry sorbet.. all of it was REALLY FREAKING GOOD.

I'm glad to see quite a handful of people outside the place every time I walk past 16th street. Really nice summer addition to the 'hood.

bergenites, i thought about that but then the ices wouldn't be white. anything i've made with meyer lemons has had an orangey tinge to it. oh, i love meyer lemons)

Me too, cause my daughter works there and makes some nice tips! Plus she brings ice cream home for me sometimes. She says that the fruit is what sweetens the sugar free ices (not so sure about the chocolate).

is your daughter one of the two pretty blondes? they love the lemon ice as well, but they say it's only lemons and water.

Potter made me go and eat a coconut sorbet (or maybe it was gelato). She dragged me kicking and screaming down the street and forced me to eat it.

That's my story and I'm sticking too it

(oh, and it was flipping dee-lish-us)

which would be funny if I was wearing pants, but seeing as I am typing from my garden, you know I'm in my PJ shorts ;-)

Is is "sugar-free" or just "no sugar added"? Maybe it's only fruit and ice because they add white grape juice to sweeten it like all those 100% juices in the store. That'd make it delicious, natural, maybe even organic, but not exactly zero calorie and sugar free.

No, I haven't tried it yet, but my daughter swears that there is no sugar in it.

you need to try it, it's amazing. but something in there is making it sweet. not saying it's sugar, but it has to be something. otherwise it would taste like
    unsweetened lemonade.

Nothing is sweet without a little sugar in it... except me that is!

Seriously if there is NO sugar in it (natural or otherwise) it has to be some kind of artificial sweetner. The New Yorker had a great article about sugar and how it impacts our brain. The holy grail of chemistry is to find a substitute that tastes just like sugar and does not make you (me) fat. Maybe this place has found the formula.
