Thanks for advising against Madison, we pulled out. Now we are hearing about a place on Jefferson. Met some ladies who live on Hancock and really like it, said Jefferson should be fine but would love the insight of anyone else around. Will post more when I get the other X street.

I would go for the Jefferson Street location... I hope it is Nostrand going east towards Marcy , it is a lovely block Frank Woolworth owner of Woolworth Department store use to live on that block 100 years ago.

I was thinking about moving to Madison. Why did you decide against it?

People on this board told me not to move to that block and other people I just met too. Random, but true. Maybe it is the same apartment building :) Seemed fine during the day but I am already in a warzone and trying to escape.

I literally feel like folks are moving in between Crown Heights, Bed Stuy, and Bushwick to avoid witnessing murders, experiencing muggings, and not be lulled to sleep by gunshots. If only I could convince my roommate to move to Queens....

In our budget there is little that is acceptable.

hopefully this isn't too personal a question, but what is your budget like and what is most important to you as far as ideal location?

in new york it seems like you have a choice between cheap, short travel time to manhattan and safety - most people can't get all three... though i'm sure some people can offer neighborhood suggestions that won't make you so uneasy...

right off the bat i'd suggest inwood -- which is overlooked. it's 40 minutes to the financial district, waaaaaaay affordable (i paid 1000/mo for a gigantic sunny studio last year), i felt safe and i heard no gunshots at night when i was living there.
