Growing up up-state (Upstate is not Westchester) I thought I liked bareque when the folks would slather some sauce on some chicken and grill it.

Then I went to school in North Carolina.

...and then I married a Texan.

And now I love barbeque, but know I never had any until I crossed into North Carolina. I might be the rare breed that can appreciate many styles of barbeque, as I'll scarf down pulled pork in a vinegar sauce or bask in the glowing warmth of brisket.

I'm hungry.

I was in Coney Island a few weeks ago and they had a truck with the best BBQ I had thrown a lip over this far north. They had a grill with a smoker and produced the tastiest ribs, pulled pork, etc. If it's still there, give it a try.

i've always felt as though north carolina barbecue has way too much vinegar. my sister-in-law is from tennessee and her husband is from north carolina and when their families get together they have barbecue-offs. tennessee always wins in my opinion.

We got back last week from my sister in law's in Raleigh (my arms aren't tired at all). Either Carmen or Santa got a recommendation for me around the triangle? FWIW I've been to Cooper's but though it was a cool place and good food it wasn't mind blowing.

allen & sons, at blackwood station ("chapel hill", though it was the county when i was a child). mamacita can back me up on this one, though for some reason that defies explanation she ordered the catfish. (i'm sure it's great, but good catfish is not the rare jewel that bbq is.)

i hear good things about a new place called, i think, the pitt, in chapel hill. on weaver dairy road.

many folks swear by bullock's in durham. the meat is good, but i like a place that takes a stand on sauce, rather than serving plain meat that you season yourself.

or head east to kinston and king's. not as good as allen & sons, but close.

all eastern style, of course.

I've heard of Bullocks and Allen and Sons. And in fact I think I read up on the Pitt while searching online at my sister in law's. We'll definitely go to A&S (your A&S!) next time we're down there.

BBQ Joint in Chapel Hill is a pretty good too.

cant remember what road its on but its close to MLK jr blv.

and even tho Coopers isnt the best the charm and price wins me over. Also the pork rinds.

Ol Time BBQ in raleigh also has the best hush puppies and they keep brining you more when you finish them.

well that bbq truck is now on quincy between bedford and nostrand ave.seems the pitmaster lives on that block as well. clintonhillblog has info on it as well as the strong buzz blog.
