78th Precinct on Bartell traffic, Nothing we can do, s

It's time to stop the drivers turning illegally onto PPSW.

1.) Maybe one out of a group of cars will turn legally. Maybe one. At every light. And it's usually the MTA bus.

2.) It causes very dangerous conditiions for drivers who want to turn legally without getting sideswiped and pedestrians who cross PPSW toward the park.

I speak to any traffic officer I see and they all say there's nothing they can do and that I should call the 78th precinct.

One officer said yesterday and I quote, "It's a lot of out-of-towners and they don't know so it's ok."

Amazed, I said, "Did you just tell me that it's legal to turn right from a straight-only lane?"

He just mumbled that it's ok.

It's not ok.

So I called the precinct and they said, "There's nothing we can do about it, so." (718) 636-6411

I then asked for Pauline Blake's phone number, the Community Council President. They transfered me to Community Affairs (718) 636-6410. It's no surprise there was no one there to answer the phone. As there rarely is.

If you're as finished as I am with a-holes driving beat up white vans turning illegally onto PPSW while flipping you—who turned legally—off, then please add your thoughts, stories, views, and telephone calls to the 78th precinct here.

we should petition for a red light camera to be installed there. that is probably the best solution. there is too much traffic volume for the way that road is engineered.

they need a light going into 15th Street too. They keep putting up bigger "yield to pedestrian" signs, but that doesn't stop anybody. I've brought this up twice at community meetings and got crap responses.

i doubt that would help. there is just no room for cars to queue at a red light without backing up into two intersections, (at ppw and the circle, and ppw and 14th st.) If anything they should reverse the direction of 14th st to siphon off some of the cars going through the circle. though i don't expect that to be popular with residents of 14th st.

Just want to back you up -- this is the most unsafe intersection with the worst driving I've ever seen (and I grew up in Massachusetts!)

They just don't care, though. That area is a black hole of law enforcement.

And bwah hah hah on the out-of-town explanation! Bwah hah hah!

Try to attend the Windsor Terrace Alliance meeting being held on Sept. 9th at 6:30,it's being held at 126 PPW the soon to be the new home of Windsor Liquor.

It's your opportunity to let your concerns be known.

I just sent an E-mail to WTA asking for representation by both the 72nd & 78th Pct.

    Will advise.

If they would just keep the commercial traffic off of PPW, open the park drive to cars for a few hours more before and after the rush hours it would relieve most of the problem (I'm sure that will be real popular on this board ). That circle was just not made to handle the kind of traffic that it does.

From my POV, the problem is in the marking of the lanes themselves as well as basic non-compliance due to non-enforcement. And it isn't just at rush hour.

The right lane should be right turn only. The center lane should be turn or straight. The left lane straight only.

Instead, the right lane is allowed to turn OR go straight. The center and left lanes are straight only.

Most of the time, at least two lanes are turning, but legally, you could have someone in the far right lane going straight!

It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Opening the park would certainly eliminate the Friday fiasco of out of control drivers rushing through lights on PPW to get to Boro Park before dark.

I agree, plus the bus stop on the corner before the turn, the bus sitting there blocking the turning line as the driver gets a news paper and then continuing straight around the circle from that turning lane… it's a mess, I don't think there is one answer.
    :(

The bus stop is a big part of the problem. Sometimes there are two buses there, pushing traffic to the left before the turn.

The 72nd is having it's monthly community meeting tonight and won't be able to attend.

There is a community meeting scheduled for Sept. 25th and both the 72nd & 78th Pcts are scheduled to attend.

I'll post an update with time and location later in the week.
